National County Sports Meet Day-1 Recap

An action photo from the opening match between Margibi and Grand Bassa

Another edition of the National County Sports Meet got underway on Saturday, December 11 with a mixture of excitement and boredom among supporters of the 15 counties of Liberia.

Group A (Margibi)

Margibi 0-2 Grand Bassa

Moses Meah celebrates after scoring his second goal for Grand Bassa

Hosts Margibi had themselves to blame after putting out a discouraging display against Grand Bassa in the opening match of this year’s County Meet.

After a goalless first half, Moses Meah became the star player of the day by recording a brace to quiet the majority of supporters (Margibians) at the Nancy B. Doe Stadium in Kakata, Margibi County.

Margibi’s hitman, Abraham Fofana, couldn’t announce himself to Margibians as usual, as he struggled to get a ball on target.

The hosts are now under pressure ahead of their second match against Montserrado as another defeat will see them remain in the group stage of the tournament.

River Gee 1-0 Montserrado

Underrated, perhaps because of their small population, River Gee showed that they are capable of making a deep run in this year’s county meet.

Patrick Dweh’s lone goal in the first half helped River Gee secure all three points after Montserrado failed to utilise a couple of chances that came their way in the first 45.

The tournament will continue across the various venues on Wednesday, December 15.
