The 2021/22 edition of the National County Sports Meet, Liberia’s biggest sporting festival, is set to kick-off Saturday, December 11, in Kakata, Margibi County.

This year’s edition was officially launched on Wednesday, December 1, by the Ministry of Youth and Sports in partnership with Orange Liberia, official sponsor of the County.

Firstly organized in 1956 with the aim of unifying the country, the theme for this year is “Commemorating 200 Years of Togetherness Through Sports.”

Liberia will commence the celebration of its bicentennial, a year-long season of events that are meant to reclaim and herald Liberia’s pioneering role in Pan-Africanism, rebrand the country after its recent checkered history, while also celebrating Liberia’s rich cultural heritage and showcasing the vast tourism attractions.

Youth and Sports Minister D. Zoegar Wilson assured Liberians that all is set for this year's edition as counties will feature teams in five sporting disciplines this year. They include Football, Kickball, Basketball, Volleyball and Athletics.

He also disclosed that the government has budgeted US$500,000 for the month-long event, an amount of which each county will receive US$21,000.

In continuation of the sponsorship agreement signed between the Ministry of Youth and Sports and Orange Liberia in 2019, the telecommunications operator has provided US$40,000 and has “lots of goodies” packaged for spectators to enjoy their moments at the country’s biggest sporting event.
