A 29-year-old shoe shiner, only identified as Abraham, a Guinean national, died instantly at about midday yesterday when an UNMIL Jeep bearing license plate #1521 skidded off the main road and killed him while he was attending to a customer.
The incident happened as onlookers ran helter-shelter for their lives.
According to eyewitnesses, the UN vehicle was previously parked by the operator at the intersection of McDonald and Camp Johnson road, but suddenly it rolled down in reverse and killed Abraham.
Eyewitness accounts indicated that the UNMIL vehicle was in a parked position without the driver. “We don’t really know how this accident happened; maybe he did not engage the hand brakes,” an eye-witness said.
The eyewitnesses also informed our reporter that the UNMIL vehicle operator got down from the jeep to see a mechanic who was fixing his personal vehicle.
Efforts to reach the family of the deceased or the operator were unsuccessful. Officers of the Liberia National Police and UNMIL told the Daily Observer they are investigating the case.
Meanwhile, the body of the deceased was lying at the Fish Market mosque in Sinkor yesterday awaiting burial after the 2:00 p.m. prayers.
