The Sports Writers Association of Liberia (SWAL) has outlined activities leading to the commemoration of its 35th anniversary.

Founded in 1986, SWAL is an umbrella organization for sports journalists in Liberia and an auxiliary group of the Press Union of Liberia (PUL). According to the anniversary committee, this year’s anniversary will be celebrated on Saturday, September 18, at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex.

The anniversary celebration will begin with a lecture forum for members with a guest speaking on the topic: “The Importance of Sports Writing in National Development.” It will later be followed by the honoring of special sports personalities for their contributions toward the growth and development of sports in Liberia and climaxed with a football match between SWAL and the Liberia Revenue Authority at the SKD mini-stadium, the committee said.

At the same time, the committee also revealed that the 35th anniversary celebration will be used to raise funds to undertake the organization's headquarters project.

The organization currently uses an office space provided by the PUL at its headquarters on Clay Street in Monrovia. During its 34th anniversary celebration, the organization held a two-day event in Buchanan, Grand Bassa County that was characterized by the recruitment of new members and training activities as well as one-day sports activities.
