A United States based Liberian philanthropist has officially launched the Margaret & Gertrude Suah Scholarship fund drive at the AME Zion University in Monrovia.

Speaking on April 11, at Brown E. Memorial AME Zion Church in Monrovia, David K. Suah said the scholarship initiative is geared towards helping struggling students acquire higher education.

He recalled that while growing up, he found himself in a situation that made it difficult for him to go to but some people helped him, for which he decided to give back.

Suah said while in the States acquiring university education, it came a time that there was no one to sign for his student loan agreement, something that made him to drop.

However, he said a family later chose to sign for him, thus making him to become who he is today.  As a result, Suah said he thought it wise to also help that in need so that they too can help others.
Suah said giving back to society is something that he attaches importance and will continue to do so.

He told students of AME Zion University who are benefiting from the scholarship to prioritize their lesson so that they too can become useful and productive citizens, thereby reaching out to others.  Suah said beneficiaries of the scholarship must justify their inclusion or risk losing it to others who are deserving of it.

He stated emphatically that his gesture is not intended to score or seek any political office, but to give back as a Christian. Suah said his intent is to help people who he does not know, something he takes pride in and hopes beneficiaries will do so in the future.

For his part, the President of AME Zion University Dr. Benjamin Lartey commended Suah for his humanitarian gesture, which he believes, would help struggling students to acquire higher education.

Dr. Lartey said Suah has always demonstrated to be someone of his word and is excited that he chose Zion University to launch his scholarship fund drive in honor of his sisters.

He disclosed that Suah has promised to construct a building at the university’s Po-River Campus in Bomi County and added that the ground-breaking ceremony will take place immediately when Suah who left the country yesterday returns to Liberia in few months.

Dr. Lartey then encouraged the students especially beneficiaries to take their lesson seriously if they must remain on the scholarship, adding that scholarships are for scholars.

He assured Suah of AME Zion University commitment to work with him in all of his endeavors at the institution. During an interactive session, the beneficiaries praised Suah for his humanitarian gesture.  Some of the students said they were at the verge of dropping out of school when they came across Suah’s scholarship program.

“If I have not come across this scholarship program, I will not be graduating in few weeks because I never had any means of paying my school fees. Thank you so much Mr. Suah; let God bless you more and more,” one of the beneficiaries said.
