Playing barefoot with one player in boots, young boys making up teams that are participating in the on-going YMCA soccer leagues entertained soccer fans at two centers in West Point Township last weekend.
In fact one of the teams, Munchi’s striker was Monicah Mieh, a girl known to play among her male peers.
The three-day U- 12 and U-14 YMCA (April 8-10) soccer leagues, sponsored by DonamiSports began on Friday at two sports fields in West Point Township.
Team teams each competed in the two tournaments and the winners are expected to be awarded with giant size trophies, donated by DonamiSports, whose president and chief executive officer, Doc Lawson was presence during the games.
In the U-12 soccer league, Power from God FC defeated PC Sport 5-4 on penalties in the first game and Africa 54 lost 0-2 to Jr. FC in the second game.
Jr. Zion lost 0-3 to IYP FC in the third game and Retsaah FC lost 0-1 to Tabella FC in the fourth game.
In the quarter finals Power of God FC was beaten 0-2 by Africa 54 and Muchi was leading 3-0, having dominated the greater part of the game.
In the U-14 division, WPYP and Kanu FC drew 1-1 but YPYP won the penalty shootout 5-4 in the first game last Friday.
In the second game, West Point Barca defeated B. Field FC 2-0; Spartan FC won Jr. Armom Tree 1-0 and Jr. B. Munchen defeated West Point United 3-0.
The final match in the preliminaries was between Glory FC and Central Mosque FC and Glory won 5-4 on penalties.
In the first game in the quarter finals, WPYP defeated West Point Barca FC 6-5 on penalties. Other matches included Spartan, winner three’s encounter against winner four, Jr. B. Munchen FC.
Both groups had their semi and finals scheduled yesterday.
The two tournaments are being held in twelve communities in Monrovia and one each in Harbel, Kakata, Margibi County and Gbarnga, Bong County.
