Team Liberia put in a strong performance and was praised for the team’s industrious display despite as the 4-1 defeat to Indonesia in their first game at the Street Child World Cup (SCWC) in Brazil.

The West African side had the better of the first half but failed to take their chances and went in to the break level at 1-1 after a fantastic strike by Daniel Nimleh Bowdior.

Indonesia captain Sularja opened the scoring five minutes in to the game when his header crept in at the far-post. He later doubled his goal tally when he tapped in following some good movement down the left side of the Indonesia midfield.

Midfielders Malik and Jordan made sure the points were wrapped up with long-range strikes midway through the second half, both of which took wicked deflections on their way past Liberia goalkeeper Soko Gurley.

However Liberia responded well, forcing the Indonesia goalkeeper to make some very good saves. The team made their coach’s and country proud showing real commitment throughout the game and embraced what the Street Child World Cup is all about, fair play, passion and hard work.

Team Liberia Coach and Street Child of Liberia volunteer Sam Burnette afterwards commented: “I am extremely proud of how the boys performed against Indonesia. They are a solid side and have been tipped as contenders to win the SCWC tournament, so for us to give them such a good game is very pleasing.

“Of course it is disappointing to lose any football match, but I know that if we continue in this manner we will pick up points very soon. We are enjoying our time in Brazil, learning a lot and looking forward to playing our next game against South Africa.”
