A 12-day youth tournament organized by the Liberia Development Program will tomorrow kick off at the 72nd sports pitch in Paynesville with 16 participating teams.
The Liberia Development Program is a non-governmental organization involved in the development of youth through education and skills training.
Over 240 kids under the age 15 from the participating teams are expected to showcase their talents during the tournament.
The tournament is divided into two categories, the U-12 and U-15. The winner of the U12 category will be presented with a US$50 cash prize plus a grand trophy and medals, while U15 will be presented with US$80 cash prize and trophy.
A cash prize of US$15 will also be awarded to the Most Valuable Player, Best Goalkeeper and the Top Goal Scorer from both categories.
According to the organizers, the objective of the tournament is to earmark talented kids in the Paynesville area who will then be provided financial assistance to further their education.
Several teams, including the U12 team of Liberia’s international forward Sam Johnson, will be participating in the tournament. Johnson, who currently plays for Wuhan Zall in China, runs the Sam Johnson Foundation that develops young footballers.
Other U-12 participating teams include PYS FC-2; Juvenile FC-2; Perry FC; Kusa FC; Blue Angels; ABC Foundation; and Zayzay FC.
The U-15 participating teams include Paynesville Young Stars FC; Donetco FC; Top Stars FC; Mud Town FC; Juvenile FC; Lorca FC; Italy Young Starts FC ; and Female All Stars FC.
