SWAL Leadership Race Opens, Election Guidelines Released

Guidelines and procedures for the Friday, January 24 elections for new leaders to run the Sports Writers Association of Liberia, SWAL, have been released by its elections commission, chaired by former President Momolu V. O. Sirleaf.

At an official program yesterday in the Conference Room of the Press Union of Liberia, on Clay Street, Monrovia, Chairman Sirleaf, flanked by his beautiful wife Fatima Bintu Sirleaf, and member Zoegar Q. Jaynes, announced the procedures for the elections.

The gathering was attended by a cross section of sports writers from both the print and the electronic media, including outgoing President Fomba Kanneh, vice president Ms. Martina Brooks, who is reported to have declared her interest to contest for the presidency, along with another presidential candidate Roland Mulbah, former secretary general.

Other presidential candidates are Richard Manuba of ELBC and Leroy Sonpon of the Daily Observer.

Quoting the document, Sirleaf said, “Application for candidates runs from January 9 to 17 and registration is from today, January 10 to 17 at PUL office from 9a.m to 4p.m.”

He explained that campaign begins from January 18-21, 2014 and there will be a debate on January 22, 2014 at PUL or CEMESP from 2p.m to 6p.m. Campaign closes on January 23 and elections will be the next day, Jan, 24th.

Sirleaf noted that any applicant that does not submit the required registration fee and documents will be considered non-responsive to the process and will not be accepted.

Interested candidates, he said must submit a signed, type-written, one-page letter of intent, specifying position interested in; must complete non-refundable registration fee and submit one passport size photo enclosed with a letter of application.

Sireaf meanwhile announced the requirements for candidates as follows:

President:

a. Must be a full member of the PUL and SWAL

b. Must have practiced for more than four years.

c. Must be in good financial standing with SWAL.

d. The individual should also be of good Moral character.

e. Registration fee: LD$ 5,000.00

Vice President

a. Must be a full member of the PUL and SWAL

b. Must have practiced for more than four years.

c. Must be in good financial standing with SWAL.

d. The individual should also be of good Moral.

e. Registration fee: LD$ 4,000.00

Secretary General:

a. Must be a full member of the PUL and SWAL

b. Demonstrated evidence of practicing journalism for at least three years

c. Must be in good financial standing with the association

d. Registration fee LD$3, 500.00

Assistant Secretary General:

a. Must be a full member of the SWAL and PUL

b. Demonstrated evidence of practicing journalism for at least three years

c. Must be in good financial standing with the association

d. Registration fee L$2,500.00

Treasurer:

a. Must be a member of the SWAL and PUL

b. Demonstrated evidence of practicing journalism for at least two years in Liberia

c. Must be in good financial standing with the association

d. Demonstrated evidence of trustworthiness

e. Registration fee L$2,000.00

Meanwhile, the Daily Observer sports desk will review the presidential candidates in this coming Monday’s edition, as to who stands a good chance to win the leadership that could provide a new but progressive direction to sports writers and commentators in the country.
