MYS to Suspend Handball

The Ministry of Youth and Sports has announced that it’s considering suspending the Liberia National Handball Association indefinitely for disrespect and insubordination.

Deputy Sports Minister Henry B. Yonton, Jr. said the Sport Department of the Ministry has recommended the indefinite suspension of handball to Minister Lenn Eugene Nagbe.

Minister Yonton said the recommendation to indefinitely suspend financial support to handball is owing to the lack of respect and defiance for the holding of the elective congress after being mandated by the Ministry to abort it upon receipt of a letter of complaint from aggrieved handball stakeholders, headed by Hadji Saysay and Jonathan Kollie.

“Besides ignoring our mandate, we also learned that the election was conducted by one of the stakeholders owing to the nonattendance of the Chairman of Ad hoc Election Commission, Amos Korvah, who is also the president of the Liberia National Table Tennis Association,” Minister Yonton said.

“We wanted the election to be aborted to look into issues raised by the aggrieved stakeholders about credited voters – so the recommendation for the indefinite suspension has been written,” he said.

Meanwhile, when our reporter quizzed the founding and re-elected president of Handball, J. Mason Saweler, in a telephone interview, he said the Deputy Minister does not have any fact to recommend his suspension.

It may be recalled that the handball association hosted its first congress on October 30-31 at the Harbel Field House in Harbel City, Margibi County.
