Ex-Sports Minister Launches Sports Clinic for Children

Former Youth and Sports Minister, S. Tornorlah Varpilah, has launched a 10-year Sports Clinic Program in Central Liberia, targeting children between ages 6 – 15.

Mr. Varpilah said the Sports Clinic, which he referred to as ‘Pilot Project’ includes music, arts, football and basketball.

The former Youth and Sports Minister told newsmen over the weekend in Gbarnga, Bong County that the program is aimed to take the kids from the streets of Gbarnga within a period of 10 years.

Mr. Varpilah, who is also the former Transport Minister and the current Chairman of the Board of Directors of the National Port Authority (NPA), indicated that the initiative is also intended to help government develop the youth.

The former high school basketballer, who is credited for relaunching and rebranding the Upcountry Basketball Tourney after 22 years, stressed that the kids would be trained ‘By the Book’ and by qualified trainers to have a solid foundation.

He divulged that football coaches have already registered and recruited 12 community teams; while the basketball program will deal with students from the 2015 Upcountry Basketball Champions, St. Martins High School and the William V.S. Tubman-Gray High School.

He also stated that the art class will tackle 20 kids, as well.
