National County Sports Meet: Lofa Crowned Champions for the First Time

Team Lofa, the 2020-21 County Sports Meet Champs

After one month of sporting actions, the 2020/21 edition of the National County Sports Meet on Sunday came to an end with Lofa County becoming champions of the football category for the first time. The Lofians clinched the title following a 3-1 victory over Montserrado County at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex.

Sunday’s Final was Lofa’s first since 2004 when they lost 2-1 against Gbarpolu.

Montserrado County caught Lofa unaware by getting the curtain-raiser just two minutes into the game through striker Alloy Brown’s right-foot strike from a free-kick several yards away from goal.

The former champions had a series of opportunities extend their lead, but didn’t ultilize the chances.

Despite conceding an early goal, Lofa, led by double County Meet winner Coach Samuel Sumo, held their nerves and later leveled the score midway through the first half.

The equalizer was scored from a spot kick by striker James Tarpeh after Montserrado goalkeeper Andrews Nyantee committed a foul in the penalty area.

Lofa took the lead for the first time 62 minutes into the game, thanks to forward Charles Israel for a perfect left-footed placement in the bottom right corner of Montserrado’s goalpost.

It was all Lofa for the closing moments of the game as the Lofians kept dominating and finally confirmed their championship when Israel completed his brace with a brilliant header.

This year’s County Meet trophy was coach Samuel Sumo’s third in five years, having won his previous two with Montserrado County in 2017 and 2018.

Lofa won for themselves L$1 million as champions, while Montserrado bagged home L$500,000 as runners-up.

Meanwhile in the Kickball category, Grand Bassa County emerged as champions after defeating Nimba County in penalties. The game remained zero home runs apeice after six innings for both.

Kickball penalty is decided with the two teams targeting the farthest base.
