Defense Minister Brownie J. Samukai, Jr., has advised the leadership of the Liberia Taekwondo Association (LTA) to put their administrative structure in order to enable him to sponsor a taekwondo tournament.
The former taekwondo practitioner made the assertion over the weekend when he and others were awarded by the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) through the recommendation of the LTA in commemoration of its 40th anniversary.
Minister Samukai said his desire to support a taekwondo tournament is owing to the enthusiasm, energy and potential of the current taekwondo athletes.
He expressed appreciation to the leadership of the Liberia Taekwondo Association (LTA) for the recognition.
He attributed his award to former taekwondo masters who practiced before him, naming Thomas Cooper, Zuzu Martin, Bobo Lawrence, Peter Wleh, George Smith, Francis Dolo, Loveton Chea amongst others.
“I am happy today that I saw in the eyes of these practitioners energy and potential and this is why I told them that if they can organize themselves in the next several months I can sponsor a taekwondo tournament,” Samukai said.
Former Lands and Mines Minister Jonathan Mason, former taekwondo president Retired. Gen. Francis Dolo, LNOC president Philipbert Brown and Master Zuzu Martin also received WTF certificates.
The LTA also honored Liberians and Koreans who have supported the promotion and development of taekwondo in the country.
They included Montserrado County District # 7 Rep. Solomon George, Alphonso Armah, Thomas Cooper, Rev. Hyung Sub Cho, Master K-Tae Kim and Master Edward Lawrence,
Others were Mr. Mohammed Turay, Samuel Zah, Maxwell Zeon, Dennis Wallace and Amos Korvah.
