It is unusual to see the name of a goalkeeper among the list of top goal scorers in soccer. with about 200 goals so far in the ongoing Liberia Football Association’s championship, seven players have managed to score at least five goals and above.
But among those top goal scorers, Monrovia Club Breweries’ goalkeeper Abdulai Koulibaly remains the only goalkeeper to have scored five goals in three matches.
Goalkeeper Koulibaly, 25, registered his name on the score sheet this season after netting a hat-trick against first division counterpart, Keitrace FC.
Hi hat-trick raised debate among football followers as to whether the young goalkeeper was the first to score a hat-trick in the Liberian league.
According to reports, one of the oldest goalkeepers in the LFA championship, Saylee Swen, who usually takes spot kicks for his team, LPRC Oilers, once scored a hat trick for his side against UMC Roots.
Goalkeeper Koulibaly who started his goalkeeping career with Mighty Rangers in 2008 before joining Club Breweries’ junior club in the third division, increased his goal tally to five after converting two spot kicks against Invincible Eleven and LPRC Oilers.
The five goals for the shot stopper recorded his name on record of being the first goalkeeper to score at least five goals in three matches.
Goalkeeper Koulibaly netted his first career goal in 2008 from a spot-kick during his second and final match for Mighty Redeemers.
Goalkeeper Koulibaly was born on January 1, 1995 and joined his Monrovia Club Breweries in 2009, making his debut against Green Pastoral FC in the then Primer League. Monrovia Breweries finished third in the league that season. Due to the young talent’s goalkeeping skills, he was called to the national Under 20 team in 2014 at age 19 and made his debut against The Gambia and later against Ivory Coast.
Koulibaly won the best goalkeeper title in the 2nd division with Club Breweries after he helped his side to win the division championship, the Super Cup and the Knockout Cup.
He has been outstanding this season and has so far kept 11 clean sheets out of 14 matches – one in the CAF Confederation Cup’s first leg against Algerian side J.S Kabylie.
Goalkeeper Koulibaly is also among the 25 local players recently called up by national team Coach James Salinsa Debbah for the upcoming West Africa Football Union (WAFU) tournament.
