Samira FC, Freeport FC, Pags FC and Vision FC are the last four in the third division that will be competing for three slots to move to the LFA second division league.
It has been a long journey from the 3rd division champions, regional playoffs, national playoffs, ‘Big 8’ and now ‘Big 4.’ This long journey was also marked by delays due to the electoral process.
Over the weekend, the four teams advanced to the semis after securing victories in their respective matches. Samira FC were paired against Freeport FC – both from Montserrado County, while Pags, also from Montserrado County, went against Vision FC of Bong County.
During the national playoffs, Samira FC qualified as leaders of Group B after accumulating seven points out of three games before narrowly defeating Bristol FC 1-0 in the ‘Big 8’ clash. This is the first time the ‘Scoring Scorpions’ have reached this stage. They have continued to show no signs of slowing down in their mission to qualify for the second division.
Samira’s opponent, Freeport FC, have also come a long way after finishing as runners-up in Group B behind Bomi County’s Jr. Barcelona. The ‘Anchors’ later edged out Golden Stars of Bong County 5-1 in the quarter-finals. Of course, they too have shown their strength.
Today’s game between the two teams at the Antoinette Tubman Stadium will be a crucial decider and will see the first newly promoted 2nd division team. However, the loser from this game will have another chance to battle for the final slot in the 3rd place playoff.
In today’s final game, Pags FC will clash against Vision FC. The winner will join the list of the first two teams to qualify for the second division and finalists for the national playoff championship.
Pags FC have displayed some class after a great comeback in their first group match after coming from two goals down to defeat Golden Starts. They later defeated Jr. Barcelona in the quarterfinals to book their semi-finals ticket.
All four teams have strived to reach this stage, and they are hopeful of qualifying to the second division. This is football, and stranger things have happened and will continue to happen. Anything can happen today at the ATS and later in the 3rd place playoff.
Four teams, three available slots. Who are the next three 2nd division teams?
