The might of Mount Wologizi in Lofa County could not withstand the persistence of a determined Montserrado County, as Lofa bowed out of the ongoing County Meet in disappointment, but with their heads held high.

Lofa County, putting out one of their best performances, proved to hundreds of soccer loving Liberians at the Antoinette Tubman Stadium that Lofa County is not only the nation’s food basket but can also entertain fans with titillating football that sadly could not provide the most important thing in the game – goals.

Fighting for a place in the finals, Lofa County put up a grueling fight. And on three occasions, they came near to registering their names in gold. Their attackers met an unyielding defense that for 90 minutes hundreds of spectators could not determine which of the two teams would make Sunday’s finals.

Lofa County fought a good fight, many spectators told journalists at the end of the game. But since in every tournament there must be a winner, Lofa County failed to make use of their chances.

Playing a composed game, Montserrado County, relying on their recent demolishing of Grand Gedeh during extra time, waited for the opportunity to strike. Even when the game had ended 0-0 and Monsterrado County Senator Edwin Melvin Snowe was asked about who would be the victor, the former LFA president minced no words when he told the LBS that his side would win.

With the game at 0-0, and the teams heading into the a thirty-minute go-around, after which would come 5 penalties apiece, Monsterrado County turned the formbooks down and raced ahead with the opening goal inside the first half of extra time.

Fear filled many fans of Lofa County, but with at least 15 minutes of second half still left to play, they felt that the team could turn the situation around.

Though they were wrong, the fact that Lofa County reached the semifinal stage demonstrated its readiness to change the course of County Meet soccer history in the years to come.

Monsterrado County, many fans said, have some tricks up their sleeves. They could not understand their team’s surprising ability to snatch a goal when it was needed.

With the team waiting for the winner between Bong and Bassa for the finals on Sunday, soccer fans are betting their hopes on Monsterrado to win the title. But with Bassa coming out of a controversial decision that never was, and Bong waiting to snatch victory if possible, fans must wait for one of the best soccer pairings in County Meet history.

Lofa County will play for 3rd place against Friday’s loser in the Bassa-Bong encounter on Saturday.
