‘Use Sports as Unifying Force’

The organizing chairman of the General Manager Cup, (GM Cup) at the Salala Rubber Corporation (SRC), has called on the workers to see sports as a unifying force in their lives.

Chairman Cyrus Johnnie made the call recently in Weala, Cinta Township in Margibi County at the end of the annual mini league otherwise known as the “GM Cup,” organized by SRC management since in 2012. It brings together various departments of the company to play each other in various sporting activities, including football, table tennis, volleyball, kickball and basketball.

This year’s Cup was won for the third time by the Factory Department 4-2 through a penalty shootout against Camp #4, while Baypolu Town took the third place respectively.

According to Mr. Jonnie, the event helped to quench the workers stress following hard days of work.

For his part, SRC General Manager, Nicolas Bergerot expressed gratitude to the organizers of the annual sporting events, terming it as “very rewarding because it brings togetherness amongst employees as well as the employer.”

He called on employees to remain steadfast as the company goes through its “recessional period,” adding, “the current circumstances are not unique to the company, but a global situation that started in 2011, which Liberia has begun to feel the experience.”

Mr. Bergerot used the occasion to assure his employees that in spite of the ongoing situation at the company, it will engage its workforce through various activities, including soccer as they wait the time that the situation will improve.
