Diaspora International Tournament Reaches Final

The fourth annual tournament of the Diaspora International yesterday reached the grand-final with Barrolle facing LPRC Oilers on Saturday, December 31, at the Antoinette Tubman Stadium.

LPRC Oilers secured their spot following a 2-1 victory over the Shipping Boys of LISCR FC.

Oilers took the lead in the first half through Blamo Nimely’s volley over goalkeeper Gibert Okotie, which separated the two sides in the first half.

The Shipping Boys got the equalizer in the early minutes of the second half and kept creating chances to collect a win, but Varney Sando threw away the side’s opportunity.

LISCR was finally sent home in the 90th minute when Nimely skillfully lifted the ball over advancing goalkeeper Okotie.

LISCR reached the semi-final stage after demolishing the Diaspora Boys that stood in for Sun Shine Yellow Boys (Invisible Eleven) by 6-0.

The second semi-final match witnessed Barrolle eliminating the Diaspora Boys, comprising of Sekou Jabateh, Sam Johnson, George Gebro and Sekuo Mulbah among others, by 8-1.

The Diaspora Boys took an early lead after Sam Johnson scored in the team’s first attempt on goal, but the Rollers in less than five minutes got the equalizer through Julius Woto.

The Diaspora Boys, despite dominating ball possession could not prevent the Rollers from scoring through their counter attacks that led to the team tallying their goals to 3-1 in the first half.

The match later became a shooting practice to the Kayan Pepper Boys after they scored additional five goals in the second half.

The tournament, which is being held in honor of the late Cyril Allen II, kicked off on December 27 at the ATS and is sponsored by the Ministry of Commerce, Palm Spring Hotel, Liberia Coca-Cola Bottling Company, Solo Cab and Tsingtao Beer.

According to the organizers, the first winner will get a cash prize of US$500, while the runner-up will receive US$250.

They added that a match will also be played among young talents of the Monrovia Football Academy and other academies, to empower them.

The final of the tournament is slated for Saturday, December 31, at the ATS.
