An eight-day tournament, styled ‘The Coca-Cola Cup’ is expected to bring eight top teams as of Friday, May 1, at the Blue Field, PHP Community, Monrovia.
This is the first ever sponsored tournament of the Liberia’s Coca-Cola Company.
The tournament is apparently due to the solidarity visit of 10 international executives, headed by Alexander Cummings, Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer of the Coca-Cola Company to Liberia in September 2014.
The solidarity visit was owing to the outbreak of the Ebola virus in West Africa.
The Secretary General of the Liberia Football Association (LFA), B. Alphonso Armah told the Daily Observer yesterday in an exclusive interview that the country’s arch rivals, IE and Barrolle and six 1st division teams would compete in the “first pre-season and post-ebola tournament.”
He said other six participating teams are BYC FC, FC Fassell, Nimba United, NPA Anchors, Watanga FC and Aries FC.
The LFA chief scribe said activities of the Coca-Cola Cup will officially kickoff on Saturday with Media Launch at 12:00noon at the headquarters of the LFA.
“The official draw will be on Wednesday, April 28 at 7:00pm also at the LFA headquarters, while the official opening and closing and all the games will be at Blue Field from Friday May 1 through May 8,” Armah said.
He added, “Preparation fees for each team will be US$500 and the prizes for the winners will be disclosed later.”
Armah said further that “During the activities of the tournament the management of LCCBC will be represented as well as during the games.”
On a global basis Coca-Cola has been a World Cup supporter since the 1978 tournament in Argentina, in France in 1998.
In Europe, Coca-Cola is involved with the European Championship and played a prominent part in making the 1996 event in England successful.
