It was not a good day for 3rd division clubs on the first day of round two in the ongoing knockout matches after Muscat and Morris Young Tigers conceded huge defeats. However, one of the third division sides, Samira FC, put up an exceptional display.
On Thursday, Muscat FC and Morris Young Tigers were defeated by 1st division sides.
Samira FC, nicknamed “The Scorpions,” were paired against last year’s FA Cup finalists Mighty Barrolle in round-one and advanced to the next round after a comfortable 2-0 win over the Kanyan Pepper Boys at the Antoinette Tubman Stadium.
The team was later paired against another 1st division side Jubilee FC in round two where they yesterday secured another comprehensive 2-0 win over the Church Boys in the first leg at the ATS.
Two goals from Willie Jones and Jimmy Mulbah in the second half were sufficient for the Scorpions to seal their first leg victory.
The 2-0 win for the 3rd division side gave them the edge as they await the second leg of the competition, slated for June.
Samira FC from the Montserrado 3rd division championship have collected 22 points out of nine matches and are currently seated first in Group B with six goal difference against second place Freeport FC.
Unlike Samira FC, Muscat and Morris Young Tigers’ chances of securing wins in the second leg to qualify for the next round is narrow because the two sides need more than four goals against their first division opponents in the second leg.
Meanwhile, in another knockout fixture later at the ATS yesterday, the Mountaineers of Nimba United grabbed their fifth consecutive victory with a 2-0 win over 2nd division side Holder FC as they await the second leg of the competition.
The two goals scored in the last encounter yesterday summed up the total goals in the competition to 69 out of 16 matches.
