FC Bea Mountain, NPA Anchors, and Nimba United became the first three clubs to advance to the quarter-finals of 2018 Liberia Football Association knockout (FA Cup) after winning their respective matches yesterday at the Antoinette Tubman Stadium.
Second division side FC Bea Mountain continued their outstanding form after edging out first division side Nimba United in post-match penalties.
The ‘Gold Boys’ started the match on an unfortunate note after goalkeeper Allenton Sembeh was shown a red card in the third minute. Despite being reduced to ten men, the Gold Boys dominated the game and were unlucky to score a goal.
Nimba United failed to take advantage of the early minute red card as they made a few attempts on goal. A post-match penalty was the best option for the Bea Mountain, having a good penalty goalkeeper, Gbelly Wilson.
Goalkeeper Wilson proved that he was in a better position for the shootout after saving two spot-kicks after Michael Fahnbulleh threw Nimba United’s first spot kick over the crossbar.
Bea Mountain had a remarkable start in the knockout campaign after thrashing Mighty Blue Angels 4-0 in the first round and will now await their next opponent for the quarter-finals.
In the day’s second encounter, first division side Watanga escaped another upset after defeating third division championship side Muscat FC on penalties.
Joe Seibeh put Muscat ahead in the 45th minute with a powerful right-foot strike to send both teams for the break with the scores in favor of Muscat.
Watanga recovered from their poor first-half performance to get things level after forward Farsedu Logan perfectly swung in a goal in the 48th minute from the left angle of the penalty box.
Both teams pulled bodies forward in the remaining minutes to get a winning goal, but were unable until the final whistle, entering penalty shootouts.
Watanga won 5-4 after Muscat missed two spot-kicks out of six.
Earlier, NPA Anchors became the first team to book their ticket to the quarter-finals after beating Ambassadors FC 3-2. The Knockout will continue today with title holders LISCR FC continuing their defense against Stages FC.
