The Eternal Love Winning Africa (ELWA) Academy in partnership with Foundation for Women (FFW) has launched a new sport known as skateboarding.
During the launch at the ELWA Academy Gymnasium last week Friday, trainers from the Ministry of Youth and Sports and staff of ELWA Academy admonished students to take advantage of the sport as an extracurricular activity.
Some of the ELWA Academy students who spoke to the Daily Observer expressed their gratitude to the founder of the Foundation for Women for the new sport.
Pastor Arthur Williams said the sport is the dream of the founder of the Foundation for Women in Liberia, Madam Debra Lincoln.
“It is our hope that skateboarding activities will not be restricted to the ELWA Academy because we intend to extend same to other schools in Monrovia,” Pastor Williams said.
He also indicated that the ELWA Academy staff will train the students to gain skills before they can start the extension program to other schools in Paynesville and Monrovia.
For his part, the Data Analyst at the Foundation for Women, Morris Tamba, disclosed that the ELWA Academy was chosen first because of its contribution to the overall development of Liberia.
Tamba said the FFW has over the years provided microloans to hundreds of women and some of them have become successful entrepreneurs in the country.
The Dean of ELWA Academy Moses Wesseh said the administration was impressed with the introduction of skateboarding at their institution.
Wesseh said skateboarding is going to form part of the school’s academic extra-recreational activities.
“I am very grateful to the donor for having thought about the ELWA Academy for the introduction of skateboarding and pledging to extend it to other schools in Paynesville and Monrovia,” he said.
At the close of the skateboarding program, some of the trainers from the MYS and students owing to their excitement started practicing with the new sport’s materials.
