– Second and third place winners take home a total of L$15,000
A 3rd division team based in Gadnersville over the weekend won a cash prize of L$15,000 after they emerged as winners in the one day Sports Gala 2017 featuring eight (8) teams at the Tusa Field sponsored by Lexxxta Liberia, producers of YAZZ products.
Baako FC won the cash prize after defeating Topside RC in a 4-3 penalty shootout in the final.
The YAZZ Sports Gala, which was the first since the 2011 establishment of YAZZ in Liberia, was part of the entity’s corporate social responsibility, and its way of giving back to the community.
According to the Managing Director of Lexxta Liberia, Martin Bobbey, since the establishment of the company Liberians have for the past six years patronized its products.
“There are many young people in Liberia who are attracted to sports, so we decided to host this tournament to help promote football and also provide some educational materials to participating teams in the tournament as our way of saying ‘thank you’ to Liberia for receiving YAZZ into Liberia,” he said.
Director Bobbey also disclosed that the company has begun preparation to invest in the National League, with an expectation to sponsor three teams in the league.
“We have earmarked about three teams in the National League that we are going to sponsor and might extend it to the Liberia national team,” he said.
He said the company will also embark on the distribution of educational materials this week to selected high schools around Monrovia. He placed the cost of the company’s entire “Giving Back to Liberians” program at approximately US$70,000.
Several items including jerseys, copybooks, calendars, toothpaste and soap among others were distributed among tournament participants and community dwellers.
Meanwhile, Topside FC and Blue Angel FC won cash prizes of L$10,000 and L$5,000 as second and third place winners respectively.
