The Liberia Athletics Federation (LAF) has announced the cancellation of the 5km road race scheduled for Saturday, May 23, over lack of sponsorship.
The 5km road race was expected to bring students from secondary and tertiary institutions as well Liberians and foreigners to celebrate the victory over the deadly Ebola Virus Disease (EVD).
LAF vice president for technical affairs, Fred Krah in an interview yesterday said the federation is still in the hunt of at least US$6,000 for the race though earlier efforts to solicit a sponsor proved futile.
Mr. Krah said the fund would be use as cash prizes for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd winners for both the male and female categories, and printing of T-shirts and numbers for participants.
Mr. Krah said the 5km road race would have climaxed the celebration of the World Athletics Day, while the country awaits the Liberia Marathon which was deferred twice.
It may be recalled that the opener of the celebration of the Athletics Day was held on Friday, May 15, at the BWI Campus in Kakata, Margibi.
