The Ministry of Youth and Sports and Orange Liberia (the prime sponsor of the 2018-2019 National County Sports Meet) over the weekend held a joint press conference to unveil final plans for the grand kick-off slated to take place on December 16 in Sanniquellie, Nimba County. The plans, which include customized tickets, a raffle for the chance to win a trip to the African Cup of Nations and a major recycling program, were announced at the headquarters of Orange Liberia on Capital Bye-Pass on Friday, December 7.
Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports G. Andy Quamie said this year’s National County Sports Meet would usher in “a brand-new day for Liberian football and kickball.”
He revealed that while the official kickoff would be in Sanniquellie and would be attended by high-level government officials, dignitaries and thousands of fans, there would also be matches played concomitantly in Grand Gedeh (Zwedru), Margibi (Kakata) and Bomi (Tubmanburg) counties.
Deputy Minister Quamie announced several new features of the 2018-2019 National County Sports Meet including the provision of customized jerseys for all counties, footballs as well as the introduction of women’s kickball for the first time in the history of the tournament. “We are taking it to the next level,” said Hon. Andy Quamie, “we are organizing this year’s event to have the look and feel of European leagues.”
“Orange will be proud of its investment and the Liberian people will be proud of their County teams,” Minister Quamie said.
Orange Liberia further disclosed several important add-ons to the National County Sports Meet. Mobile Sales Manager Aaron Glay explained that the company had printed special tickets for the meet, which are already on sale at all Orange Liberia Stores and Points of Sales at Total service stations across the country.
He noted that the tickets had been produced with a special feature where sports fans could scratch the area to determine if they qualified to enter a draw to win several prizes including an iPhone valued at over $1,000.
Mr. Glay said, “With this Scratch & Win, we wanted to add value beyond the entrance to the games and we thought of giving the opportunity for customers who purchased tickets to also be able to win valuable prizes.”
The second new program that Orange unveiled was a Predict & Win game that would allow subscribers to predict the winner of the National County Sports Meet and stand the chance to win an all-expense paid trip to the 2019 African Cup of Nations.
Mr. Isaac Muthama, Orange’s Chief Sales Officer said that subscribers could enter the competition simply by sending a text to 6615 with the number of the county they were predicting would win.
“For ten cents or Liberian Dollar per text, ten lucky subscribers who predicted the winner of the National County Sports Meet will get an all-expense paid trip to the 2019 African Cup of Nations, wherever it will be.
“All what our subscribers have to do is send the number of the county they support: 1 for Bomi, 2 for Bong, 3 for Gbarpolu, 4 for Grand Bassa, 5 for Grand Cape Mount, 6 for Grand Gedeh, 7 for Grand Kru, 8 for Lofa, 9 for Margibi, 10 for Maryland, 11 for Montserrado, 12 for Nimba, 13 for River Cess, 14 for River Gee or 15 for Sinoe.”
He added: “the more you play, the more your chances to win as you can predict on several counties or several times on some counties to increase your chances to travel to the next 2019 AFCON,” he said.
The final big announcement from Orange was the launch of “Games of Change,” which is a new initiative from Orange Group. Ms. Sara Buchanan, Orange Liberia’s Corporate Social Responsibility and Internal Communication Director proudly announced that Liberia was the first country in the Orange Group to implement this program.
The environmentally focused initiative is intended to promote recycling through football activities. Through the program, Orange will place recycling bins and staff at major venues of the National County Sports Meet. Fans who collected at least five wasted water plastic bags and presented them to the staff manning the bins would be entered into yet another competition for the chance to win one of the many prizes such as jerseys in recycled plastic, footballs, and mobile phones.
Finally, Mr. Noel Chateau, Orange Chief Marketing, Communication, and Customer Experience Officer summarized the three activities introduced by Orange. “With the Scratch & Win, Predict & Win and Games of Change activities, we want to give all the chances to our customers to be a winner in this great tournament together with the team they support.”
