The 2017 edition of the Intra-Government Tournament, which brings the three branches of government together, is expected to kick-off on Thursday, March 23, the Ministry of Youth and Sports has announced.
This year’s tournament will be played at the Antoinette Tubman Stadium and BYC’s Blue Field, both in Monrovia.
In a letter to the Legislature, the first branch of government, the Ministry said under the auspices of the Bureau of Sports, it organizes the annually intra-governmental tournament with a goal to enhance social
cohesion and bridge the gap between top and lower level managers/employees in the public sector.
“All affiliated institutions attached to the Executive, Judiciary and Legislative branches of government are eligible to participate in the two disciplines to be competed for in both categories (football and kickball) during the tournament, and a fee of US$500 is required for registration.
“The registration process begins Friday, February 17 and ends Friday, March 17, at 4pm,” stated Deputy Sports Minister Henry B. Yonton Jr.
“I look forward to solicit your cooperation in the interest of promoting physical fitness in the public sector…”
In an exclusive interview with the Daily Observer via mobile phone, Minister Yonton said the draw for the tournament is scheduled for Monday, March 20.
“We are expecting at least 36 institutions from the government; and the games will be played both at the ATS and the BYC’s Blue Field,” Minister Yonton said.
It may be recalled that the football segment of the 2016 intra-government tourney was won by the Ministry of Information, Cultural and Tourism (MICAT), while the Judiciary won the kickball title.
“The tournament also promotes physical fitness and recreation among civil servants and top government officials for the enhancement of good health, while at the same time promoting friendship and good sportsmanship,” he said.
