The selection of athletes to represent Liberia at the 91st Traditional Boxing Day activities in Freetown, Sierra Leone, from December 23-26 has been made by the Liberia Athletic Federation. Among the 54 entrants, nine athletes – three females and six males – secured their qualification at the end of a time trial on Saturday, December 16 at the Samuel K. Doe Sports Complex.
According to Coach Samuel Cooper, the athletes participated in seven events; 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, Long Jump and Shot Put.
1500 Gold Medalist Anis Faraj is the only seeded sprinter, and is currently based in Accra, Ghana.
Those who qualified for the 2017 Boxing Day activities in Freetown include Nancy Saah (100m/200m/Long Jump); Lucy Massaquoi (1500m); Otricia Borkuah (Long Jump/High Jump); and Anis Faraj (1500m/5000m).
Others are Philip Lademo (400m); Kadmiel Enders (High Jump); Andrew Kpehe (1500m/ 5000m); Marcox Sackie (800m); Rahin Nah (100m/200m) and Charles Gbelia (100m/200m/ Shot Put)
In the 2016 Boxing Day activities, the first post-Ebola Boxing Day program, Liberia snatched five medals – one gold, two silvers and two bronze medals. Faraj (aka Butterfly) won the lone gold medal.
The Sierra Leone Athletics Association has invited the LAF to participate in its 91st Traditional Boxing Day Athletics competition that will be held at the Siaka Stevens Sports Stadium in Freetown, Sierra Leone.
Meanwhile, the LAF has announced that it is soliciting sponsorship in the amount of US$13,000 for transportation and per diem for the athletes and officials for the tournament.
