Noted to be a philanthropist and a humanitarian that contributes to the causes that benefit women and girls in Liberia, Benita Urey has gotten another "opportunity" to empower girls, this time around through sports.

Established in 2019, Shaita Angels comprises a group of girls, majority of whom hail from Careysburg, Montserrado County. Involved with kickball, one of Liberia’s traditional sports for a lengthy period, the girls took up that challenge to break gender barriers by choosing to play football, thanks to G. Nelson Menyeah, president of the club for the establishment.

Despite debutants in the lower women’s division, the Careysburg Angels made their presence felt in the league after finishing as runners-up to the league winners, City Football Academy, thus securing them a space in the upper division for the 2021/22 league season.

The club made those efforts with limited support. However, they could do better in the upcoming league season with the addition of Ms. Urey as Vice President of Administration.

“I strongly believe that this is yet another opportunity for Shaita FC to empower more girls from Careysburg. Before I came on board, the board members and technical staff made it their mission to uplift girls from Careysburg and this is exactly what drew me to want to be a part of Shaita Angels in any way I could,” she added.

The 23-year-old philanthropist believes that her addition to the team will not just empower the girls, but also make the team a force to reckon with in the upper women's division.

“I stand here today because I don’t want to only empower these young girls, but I also strongly believe that so much good can come from Careysburg and it is about time the world gets to know. Today I am officially able to start impacting the lives of the girls from my hometown. Today we start a new journey and that journey is to make Shaita Angels number one. It’s possible; don’t overlook these girls. I’m also a girl from Careysburg so I know what they are capable of,” Ms. Urey added.

Making remarks at the unveiling ceremony, Benoni Urey, father of the Club VP, apologized to the officials and players of Shaita Angels FC for not being involved with the team from the initial stage.

Urey, a prominent resident of Careysburg, however, pledged his fullest support and promised to solicit support from “Careysburgdians” in and out of Liberia to support the team that hails from the district that has produced several sporting personalities including Urey himself, an outstanding basketball player during his prime.

At the same time, the club on Wednesday announced Coach Lucretius Togba as the new Head Coach ahead of the new league season. Coach Togba is one of few certified CAF License A coaches in Liberia with decades of experience in the coaching field.

The veteran Liberian coach was one of the coaches assigned to women’s football clubs by the Liberia Football Association last season and guided Blanco FC from the coaching line as they finished 3rd in the 2020/21 LFA Upper Women’s Division league season. Shaita will commence their new league season with an away fixture against Earth Angels at the Tusa Field before hosting Blanco FC at the Technical Center in Careysburg- their first home match.
