Scorpion Inter-College Basketball Tournament Hits Semifinals Today

Defending champions AME Zion University will take on Starz University in the first semifinals.

 

Four Universities are now left in the 2021 Scorpion Intercollege Basketball tournament with two set to progress to the grand final from today’s semifinal matches at the Sports Commission on Broad Street, beginning at 3:00 PM.

The winners of this year’s edition will bag home L$70,000, while the runners-up will take home L$30,000.

In today’s semifinal matches, Starz University will take on defending champions AME Zion University, while the University of Liberia and Stella Maris will battle things out in the last showpiece of the day.

The tournament began on December 3 with eight universities facing off in the first round of matches in a knockout format. In-game one, Starz University came from behind to defeat Blue Crest 53-50 in a match that was termed “the battle of digital supremacy.”

Later in game two, AME Zion for the third consecutive time progressed to the semifinals with a 40-32 win over AMEU. It was a walkover for Zion as they maintained a commanding lead in the two halves.

This was followed by game three, where the University of Liberia defeated Cuttington University by 37-29 points to reach the semis. In the last semifinals clash, Stella Maris edged past Adventist University 48-31 in a tight and entertaining match, but it was Stella Maris that did the booking of the semifinals ticket at the end of the day.

The tournament is an annual event that provides the platform to young athletes the rare opportunity to display their skills, talents, intelligence, confidence, university pride and leadership, to further advance them in society through sport.
