There were two important omissions in yesterday’s editorial concerning South Africans who lived in Liberia during the apartheid years. Both were two outstanding musicians.
The first was Hugh Masekela, the celebrated South African trumpeter and the second, Philimon Hou, composer of the best selling hit “Grazing in the Grass.”
Hugh Masekela lived in Liberian throughout the 1980s and frequented the nightclub Hibiscus on Broad Street, Snapper Hill, Monrovia, just below the Ducor Intercontinental Hotel. He even started building a house in Monrovia.
Philimon Hou died in Liberia in the late 1980s and was buried here.
Thanks for the space.
