Ebola Is a Virulent Killer

Mr. Editor,

The Americans have projected that with the exponential and rapid increase in Ebola fatalities in West Africa particularly in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea could reach 1.5 million deaths by January 2015 if adequate and sustained international interventions and support to contain and eradicate the virus are wanting.

We Liberians are a small population. Imagine Liberia loosing 500,000 to Ebola if this projection is accurate, which we hope will not be the case; this would amount to two times our casualty rate from the Liberian civil war over a 14-year period. This is unacceptable and should not be allowed to happen.

The majority of Liberians accept the reality that Ebola is a virulent killer. But they do not accept the cruel killing brought on by Ebola in the country and as such, are not following instructions from our health workers.

To the few others of our people who refuse to accept the truth about Ebola for whatever reason, I say to them, they are in denial and are destitute of precious fruit (the truth about Ebola).

This is not the time to pussyfoot with your life, to be cynical, to be skeptical, to be doubtful or to be sardonic about Ebola; Ebola is a virulent killer. Ebola can only be contracted through contact with the bodily fluid (Blood, Saliva, Sweat, Vomit, Diarrhea, etc) of an infected person.  And so to stay alive, listen to our health services practitioners and providers and do as they instruct. Make sure you wash your hands as often as possible, do not touch dead bodies, cook your food well and so on. Ebola kills and it will kill you if you do not take preventive measures.
