Today the heart of the Senate bleeds profusely not because there is news of a death in the nation, but because we have to bid farewell to a hero who will not be forgotten.
Here lies the body of a hero. He was a religious hero. He was a hero of peace and unity. I still see him in June 1990 traveling with the Liberian delegation to Sierra Leone to negotiate peace for Liberia. He preached the message of peaceful coexistence.
Certainly a Giant Cotton Tree has fallen! We were saddened and our hearts quivered when the announcement came to the Nation that the great Islamic scholar and cleric, the respected and esteemed Sheikh Kafumba Konneh’s heart has ceased to beat!
The nation has lost a giant and a true patriot; a champion for peace and democracy. Sheikh Kafumba Konneh rose beyond religious lines. He was a man for his people. He made enormous sacrifices for the peace we enjoy today in Liberia and we will forever remember this sacrifice.
He was a gift to Liberia and the African Continent and the world at large. He condemned the rise of Islamic Fundamentalism all over the world. He made us to see the pureness of Islam. He taught peace and love to everyone he met. He was one of the best evangelists the Islamic Faith has ever had in Liberia.
Sheikh Kafumba Konneh worked so well with the Council of Churches at the level that elevated religious tolerance to nobler heights and we shall all commit to sustain the gains. The young generations of Muslims in Liberia will follow his teachings; no doubt we will have a purer Muslim faith practiced in Liberia because of his teachings, values, and legacy which we honor today and which will abide with us forever.
Sheikh Kafumba Konneh, Liberia will miss you; but your contributions to the survival of this country and the advancement of peace and love amongst humankind will continue to inspire us – it will guide us to live together as brothers and sisters for that was the object of your fight.
Accordingly, we have not come to bury him. Heroes live on; freedom fighters live on and their dreams never die; Heroes die only when they are forgotten; their memories live on. The Sheik has only changed residence and he is with Almighty Allah today.
May the Almighty Allah be gracious unto you and grant you a peaceful repose at His right hand in His blissful presence with exceeding great joy.
The Almighty Allah will say: “Well done, my faithful servant.” We hope to meet again, Ameena!
