T. Edison Gbana Is Dead

Professor T. Edison Gbana, who once served as Chairman on Education of the National Transitional Legislature of Liberia, has died.

This sad event occurred on  Wed., July 23, 2014 at 11:45 a.m. at the home of his  daughter, Mrs. Delvina Parteh  in Paynesville, near Monrovia, following a protracted illness.  He was in his 76th year.

A graduate of St. John’s Episcopal High School and Cuttington College and Divinity School (now Cuttington University), where he studied  Secondary Education, Mr. Gbana later matriculated to the State College of Iowa (now University of Northern Iowa, where he took the Master’s degree in Education. 

He commenced his professional career in 1960 as a classroom teacher at the Booker Washington Institute (BWI), where he also served as registrar, director of Business Education and curriculum developer.

In 1976 he was appointed principal, St. Augustine Episcopal High School, Kakata; and in 1994 principal, AME Zion Academy.  He earlier served as administrative and technical assistant to the Director of the Bureau of the Budget, R.L.

Professor Gbana also served during the civil crisis as

Chairman, NTLA Committee on Education, Co-Chair, Civil Society Movement of Liberia and president, National Association of Liberia School Principals.

On December 1965 he wedded Fanny Harvey Gbana, which union was blessed with several children.

T. Edison Vaanii Gbana was born on December 21, 1938 in Bendaja, Porkpaa District in upper Grand Cape Mount County, to union of Mr. Siafa Mbavai and his wife Mrs. Bindu Dazangbu Gbana.

His lifelong friend and classmate was Dr. S. Jabaru Carlon, former Commissioner, Governance Commission, R.L. and former professor of Education, University of Liberia.   They began their educational sojourn in 1945 at the St. Phillips Episcopal Village School in Bendaja and on to the Episcopal Elementary School at Mbaloma, both in Grand Cape Mount County.

The funeral rites of Prof. T. Edison Gbana are scheduled to begin with removal of the body from the A.B. Roberts Funeral Parlor in Gardinersville on Friday, Aug. 15, 2014, at  four o’clock p.m. and transported to Trinity Cathedral for wake keeping, beginning at six o’clock p.m.

The Funeral mass is due to take place at Trinity on Sat., Aug. 16., beginning at 10 a.m.   

Interment will follow immediately at the Kaizer Memorial Cemetery in Brewerville, Montserrado County.
