UPP Seeks Engagement with Ruling Party

The United People’s Party (UPP), one of Liberia’s oldest political institutions, has taken an exception to a recent statement by President George Weah that failure of his government will be blamed on opposition political parties in the country because they are not helping his government with suggestions and ideas to help move the country forward.

In a statement issued by the UPP, the party rejected the President’s assertions and noted that as a political party collaborating with the Congress for Democratic Change; it has proffered many suggestions to the President and the party for consideration, but they have failed to honor those suggestions and ideas.

“The United People’s Party is convinced that the current posture of political collaboration, which is evolving in Liberia, is a constructive engagement position – rooted in the adage that two heads are better than one. UPP calls on President Weah and the CDC leadership to welcome, encourage, and support this new trend in Liberian politics as a means of reducing the political tension in the country,” said the UPP in a statement.

The statement signed by the party’s National Chairman, T.Q. Harris, notes that since the inauguration of the CDC Administration, UPP has consistently proffered suggestions and practical solutions to fix the economy. We have quietly advanced a number of ideas and strategies for creating quick-impact projects which could lead to the creation of job opportunities, especially for the youths. We have also advanced procedures and processes leading towards National Reconciliation.

Although not clarified as to what the party claims were to be done in terms of development, UPP went further to say: “We have suggested development and implementation of national food production program, using a domestic menu-based school-feeding as an immediate and sustained market; and a massive construction program, using not less than 80% local material including re-enforced soil brakes and roofing tiles, along with local planks and timber.”

The Liberian political environment is taking a new shape.  Unlike the past when several political parties contested individually with the most popular candidate driving that party to victory in an election, parties are now merging to form collaboration.  The first successful merger is the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) that comprises the National Patriotic Party (NPP), the Liberia People Democratic Party (LPDP), and the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC).  By their merger, they seized state power in the 2017 presidential election.

Right after the election, the All Liberian Party (ALP), the Liberty Party (LP), Alternative National Congress (ANC) and the former ruling Unity Party (UP) quickly merged to form the Collaborating Political Parties (CPP), and since its formation, it has posed a political threat to the ruling party and is strategizing in every way to grab power in the upcoming senatorial election on December 8 this year and the 2023 presidential election.

In recent days another group of political parties under the Rainbow Coalition came out with the desire to form a collaboration to contest in upcoming elections.

While these efforts have been exerted in some political quarters in pursuit of seizing state power through collaboration, the UPP remains with the ruling party and seeking its recognition to involve it in the leadership process.

“As a collaborating opposition party, UPP has been unwavering in its support for the CDC Administration. In 2018 when the President invited political parties at the Bella Casa hotel for a meeting, UPP was represented by its National Chairman and its Political Leader; along with other National Executive Committee members,” UPP put forth ideas to move the country forward,” said the statement.

The UPP in its statement recalled that in 2019, the Administration organized the National Economic Conference which was held at the Ministerial Complex and invited political parties, again UPP showed up and offered constructive contribution during the deliberations.

“Since the 2017 election, opposition political parties collaborating with the CDC, including the United People’s Party, have stood ready and willing to assist the Administration in the process of nation-building. But we have yet to be constructively engaged and consulted on how best to address the critical national issues from the perspective of the opposition,” the UPP release said.

According to the UPP, while it is true that parties, including the United People’s Party, that are collaborating with the CDC since during the 2017 election season, are opposition parties, it is well to note that, politically, they have decided to relate to the Weah Administration as partners in the search for lasting solutions to national problems; fully aware that the issues are much too large and complicated for the Weah Administration to handle alone.

  1. UPP still existing???? We thought UPP been long gone and extinguished along with LPP, NDPL,, etc. from the face of the earth?

  2. Few more political parties (names withheld) have lost steam during the past year. This year, (2020) is even worse! The leaders of those sluggish parties (again, names withheld) may want to blame Covid-19 for their lost of steam, but it’s a snake oil story that will not sell. Ladies and gentlemen, what should be understood is that the leaders of those “near extinct parties” have had no productive economic or political ideas in the past and even now. Come 2023, UPP, LPP, NDPL and other unnamed parties will definitely find it difficult to convince the Liberian electorate about anything.

  3. These political parties and their leaders as T.Q. Harris, “Old Man Momo of Grand Cape Mount”, William G. Nyanue, Joseph Boakai, etc. etc. are now realistically THE DINOSAURS of the bygone era of Liberian politics still of the conviction that “politics is a lucrative business.”

So, according to them, it will not be in their selfish and corrupt interest to bow out and leave the muddy waters of Liberian politics to the young generation as the CDC, President George Manneh Weah, firebrand and patriot Mulbah Morlu, firebrand and patriot Wilmont Paye, etc.etc.!

The overwhelming evidence and proof beyond all reasonable doubt that these political dinosaurs of Liberian politics are of no useless, dangerous, and dictatorial, was made manifestly clear when old and ugly Jospeh Boakai in his obsession to be president at 80 or 90 years old conspired with dinosaurs like Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, and the other dinosaurs in the Unity Party (a political dinosaur), and overthrew their young Chairman firebrand and patriot Wilmont Paye because of his conviction in the ballot box and the peace and stability of the nation.

The overwhelming evidence and proof beyond all reasonable doubt that these political dinosaurs of Liberian politics are of no use, AND DANGEROUS…

  5. Sr. Engineer, Geophysicist: Peter Curran (Yarkpajuwur N. Mator 2017-Independent Presidential Candidate)

Nothing under CDC, ANC, UPP, CPP, etc will work. Nothing is set up. Know-How and Education is the Key.

Ofcourse President Weah’s Administration had failed long ago because they didn’t have the Know-Hows, Trades, Skillsets, resumes, etc; we are not taking about that now.

But can you imagine Cummings talking about creating 100,000 jobs in 90 days? What was this man thinking? These groups do not have the Skillsets Liberia needs.
Almost all these groups are like the CDC. Most of these groups went with CDC and they have all failed together; not only CDC.
Liberian, you must concentrate on the best educated people in our most needed areas to do the job. We need to build industries, products, drinking water systems (NOT Well water), etc.
    We are coming!

  6. Chief Engineer, Mr. Peter Curran,

Your last statement reads, “We are coming”!

What do you mean by that? In other words, when you say “we are coming”, who on earth are those people that you are coming with? By the way, when is your arrival date? Furthermore, what are you coming with? Machetes? Jet fighters? Tanks? Beautiful women? Make yourself known! Don’t be unknown.

The cornerstone of your argument centers around the following…..
    – Skill-set,…Good idea. But do your supporters have skill-sets? If so, why withhold their names?
    What are their specific skill-sets?

    – Know-how,…Are your supporters blue or white color people? Working class people? Urban dwellers? Educated suburbanites?

-. Education….. How do you intend to improve Education in Liberia? Do you have some ideas?

-. Agricultural development….. Every country should have the guts or machismo to feed itself. So in the area of Agriculture, a firm commitment in farming is important. Guineans and Liberian nationals who live in nearby countries dump food “for sale” in Liberia. First of all, will you halt such a nefarious practice? Second of all, what are your specific skill-sets in Agriculture? Lastly, how will you go about dealing with Agriculture in Liberia during your presidency?

    My Concern:
No one knows the name of your party. If there is one, no one knows where your party is based. Mr. Curran, you obviously have problems with Alexander Cummings’ idea of creating 100,000 jobs in three months. Since the soccer ball is in your court, be generous and respond professionally….how many jobs can you create in ninety days? Do you think Cummings is crazy when he states that100,000 jobs can be created in ninety days?

Don’t be lethargic gentleman. Come clean once and for all. Don’t hide yourself in the basement? Get out there, honorable Curran. Present your contrast.

  7. Mr. Hney, I simply find it difficult to see why one will not have a problem with Cummings´ promise of creating 100,000 jobs in ninety days, when there is no fundamental difference between such promise and one promising :” If elected as President of Liberia, I promise to fly faster than a speeding bullet! Leap tall buildings in a single bound! And personally save the earth!”

Even the very Alex Cummings knows that even the most advanced and greatest, and the highly wealthy economies have never ever done such in ninety days and can never ever deliver such in so short a period! For such is not only difficult, but absolutely impossible!

And this is where I detest Alex Cummings to this day: for him proving that he is simply the typical 18th or 19th century LIAR IN POLITICS who takes the electorate or the voters to be fools! Rhetorics and Lies are two different actions or phenomena!!! The former is acceptable and emulative, while the latter is INSULTING AND SATANIC!!!

  8. Mr. True Nationalist is a genuine patriot! The honorable gentleman is not just a patriot, but rather a genuine patriot.

  9. True Nationalist,

I am really sickened by your devotion and allegiance to mundanity, but I have developed a passion for reading your comments. I also hold severe abhorrence for your use of profanities which contrast with your clamping down on another commentator calling you a young man. If you really want to be respected as an older person or a person of experience, you must refrain from profanities and learn to placidly make your points.
“The age of Methuselah has got nothing to do with the wisdom of Solomon!”

Like you, many Liberians without a regional or most vastly an international outlook and developmental mindset see it impossible to create 100,000 jobs in the first 100 days of the ANC leadership. We understand you but, in a democracy, where the freedom of speech is cherished and upheld, enter public debate with the individual who made such assertion and brainstorm his solutions. It is against this background we hold debates during elections for people to ask questions.
I beg you and all CDCians to come to the next debate at the dawn of 2023. Stop avoiding debates, let’s exchange and then the people can decide.
CDC has major problems because the party has no plan but a very naïve and stupid slogan, “It is our time to rule too, the people have ruled us for too long, what did they do when they were here?”

Let me just remind you that as president elect in October 2023, Cummings will begin to deplore his plans and projects immediately before inauguration in January of 2024.
We will NOT wait to be elected before we begin to study projects; they have been identified and ready for execution. At present, we are looking out for the required human resources to spearhead some projects.
This is a serious political party, a people of vision and countenance and not a band of thieves and murderers!

Your country Liberia does NOT collect even 0.1% of its taxes on the average. The ANC will endeavor to put mechanisms in place that will permit it to collect at least 5% of taxes in the first quarter of 2024. This process alone can generate 5,000 direct decent jobs in Computer Science, Public Administration and Taxation and at least 10,000 indirect jobs.

Liberia currently has poor human capital due to meagre salaries, a major impediment for the inflow of qualified and morally clean and motivated workforce.
Since 1847, Liberia has NEVER been able to connect its major cities to the capital to ease displacement and encourage tourism.
Since 1847, Liberia has NEVER been able to provide high grid electricity nor pipe borne water to cover the length and breadth of the country.
Since 1847, Liberia has NEVER been able to provide television coverage to the length and breadth of the country; this alone explains the level of ignorance of the children of Liberia to their own country.

Allow me to not cite all but these are projects that require huge investments which require extensive human capital (qualified and unqualified).
We need the right fingers to hold the pen to sign concession contracts, privatization deals, productive loans and provide assurance foreign direct investments.

For our generation, Cummings is a golden opportunity to not let go, if not Liberia may be redeemed by our children or grandchildren.
Do not describe what you do not know how to do as “INSULTING AND SATANIC”. While you could have found it foolish to fly in the past, the Wright Brothers saw it possible. Today, we easily travel due to the foolishness at that time of those brothers who risked their lives and resources.

Liberia has so many untapped potentials, all we need is the right executive and morally clean legislature to weed out dodgy lawyers and corrupt cops from the system.
Whenever people who are interested in investing in Liberia read about stories like the 2 Turkish businessmen losing more than 5 million in the thin to corrupt and stupid lawmakers and bankers, it frightens other prospective investors.
This is no politics, let’s use our brains and let go of tribalism and nepotism.

    Liberia needs to rise again!
