The UP is revoking the membership of its Standard Bearer Emeritus, President Sirleaf, on claims that she supported the opposition candidate, George Weah of the Coalition for Democratic Change. She has consistently denied the claim and still considers herself a member of the Unity Party.

But she rejects action, terming it illegal

The ruling Unity Party issued a statement over the weekend, expelling its former standard bearer President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf for what it says was her meddling in the 2017 elections in which its candidate Vice President Joseph Nyuma Boakai lost to popular footballer George Weah. Also expelled were River Gee Senator Conmany Wesseh, his wife Medina Wesseh and Patrick Worzie. President Sirleaf has however dismissed the action, terming it illegal.

In a Press statement issued late Saturday, the Party amongst other things said “The behavior of the expelled persons … constitutes sabotage and undermined the existence of the party”. The release also said the expelled persons had violated party rules requiring Party members to support all Unity Party candidates in elections.

It can be recalled that in last November, during the period to the runoff, there were reportedly failed attempts by some UP stalwarts to expel  President Sirleaf. Party Chairman Wilmot Paye had at the time declared at a Press conference that President Sirleaf had, one month earlier, acted inappropriately by meeting with Elections Magistrates and some NEC Commissioners in the privacy of her home just about on the eve of October 10 elections.

Paye further declared in his Press statement,Greed has resurfaced in its most callous form, sowing seeds of discord yet again with the intent of disrupting the fragile peace of Liberia.”Sources say the statement was in reaction to what was described by some ranking party officials as President Sirleaf’s alleged funneling of large amounts of cash to the opposition first to the Brumskine led Liberty Party and subsequently to the Coalition for Democratic Change.

According to sources, the then attempted expulsion was thwarted by Vice President Boakai who prevailed on Party Executives, especially members of the Youth league, and successfully convinced them to restrain from such action. However this time around it is still not clear whether Vice President Boakai had endorsed such an action. Sources say the decision to expel President Sirleaf was taken in a meeting held at the home of the Vice President.

Further according to sources, when word got out about the Party’s impending action a large group of individuals converged on the Party’s Congo Town headquarters, allegedly with the intent to disrupt the meeting. Upon learning that Party executives were convening the meeting at the home of the Vice President they stormed the area but were  prevented from forcibly entering the home of the Vice President after security officers threatened to open fire on anyone attempting to forcibly enter the home of the Vice President.

According to diplomatic observers near Monrovia, the expulsion of President Sirleaf by her own party at this eleventh hour when she should instead be receiving her flowers from the very Party, could becloud her image and dent whatever legacy she intends to bequeath to Party and country. Party executives however remain self-assured that their course of action was in keeping with party rules and regulations

But President Sirleaf, according to Presidential Press Secretary Jerolinmek Piah, has dismissed the action terming it as illegal and not in conformity with party rules and regulations.

He added, “the pronounced action by the UP will not have a reaction from the President because it is not an action that requires or deserves a reaction form the President. She is focused on concluding her transition”.

Mr. Piah did not explain in detail why the President considered the UP’s action against her illegal but said, “the party rules are clear as to how such decisions can be derived.  Expulsion does not come from the thin air. There are things that an individual should do that result in expulsion. When she leaves the Presidency, the party matter will be handled the party way. As far as she is concerned, she still considers herself a member of the UP”, Mr. Piah emphasized.

At this point it still remains unclear just how far reaching the implications of this recent move might be but some analysts say that such an action coming just days before President Sirleaf is expected to preside over the UN High Level Panel on Migration and the official celebration of ECOWAS  Human Rights Day, may throw a blight on what should otherwise be crowning moments of glory climaxing 12 years of service as President of Liberia.

  1. The honeymoon ended between UP and EJS – after 2012 – when the Youth Wing of the party publicly demonstrated for being left out during post elections’ job distributions. Yet EJS was never the problem in 2017; a dozen years of the party’s bad governance was intolerable for those undergoing poverty and hunger. So what existed between UP and EJS (after the 2013 oration of UP Chairman Counselor Varney Sherman) was an internal strained relationship.

Moreover, EJS never shied away from a resolve to not support vice president Boakai, whom she thought deserved to be retired also after a second term. Most importantly, only a dullard would’ve believed that after a dozen years of poverty, the Country – Congua majority downtrodden will vote eighteen years for UP to stay in power. So the refrains – EJS has lost the confidence of the populace, she “should’ve been above the fray”, and is a fiend, all sound confusing and depressing.

GMW won, Daily Observer, you lost: Give him a chance to form a blinking government!

  2. “THE RED CARD WAS ISSUED AT THE 90th MINUTES OF A RETIREMENT SOCCER MATCH”
The Unity Party was founded to foster the idea of Economic Liberalism Liberal Democracy, and its position to rule from the center or political Centrism. The new brand of the Unity Party is quite different from that of Edward B. Kesselly’s version. Our new Unity Party has built in mount of hives of in-house fighting cliques. All hell broke lose when Madam Sirleaf sensed that faction of the fragmentized party was planning to go after her or her son if the Unity Party have won the election. Taking that into account, Madam Sirleaf mount a counter force (as alleged by her accusers in her own party), to level the field in her favor.

It was unclear prior to the Oct. 10 pool, what effect the break away faction would have had on the result of the election in favor of the Unity Party. The Party leadership ignored Madam Sirleaf influence on Liberian politics. Before going to the Oct. 10 pool, the Unity party wing led by Joseph Boikai, and et al, had no plane as to how to assemble a winning team. The party leadership, if there was any at all, was not interesting in setting a wining team, but were busy going after Ellen and accusing her of her link with the CDC. Still, Boakai’s team believes—-probably with good reason—–prior to Oct. 10 pool, it was significantly easy to beat CDC in the pool.

No one must underestimate the political ability of Madam Sirlef. She has played her game for the past 37 to 40 years. Given her a ‘Red card’, at this last days of her career, is just as light, as a fallen leaf. This exposed how weak the Party leadership is.

  3. I disagree with Gen. Bah because in his closing commentary he states that the UP has been exposed as a weak party, given its expulsion of Johnson-Sirleaf. Gen. Bah’s position is far from the truth. Also, I’d like to state unequivocally that I am not a member of the UP. But, I am ecstatic because Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, has been dealt a severe blow. I come to the rescue of people or organizations when I feel that something is not trending right. Indeed, I will defend the UP’s action because it is undeniably true that Johnson-Sirleaf is and has been manipulative over the years. Most of what she’s been doing is slowly coming to destroy her. There’s no one to blame but herself! I will not hesitate to defend my younger brother in Sidney, Australia, when he’s under attack from anyone including the devil!

Under Johnson-Sirleaf, unemployment went up incredibly high amongst the youth, the unskilled and semi-skill of Liberia. But yet at the same time, “some” government officials and the legislators did well economically. Legislators gave themselves a good retirement package but left out the civil servant employees. Yet, Johnson-Sirleaf didn’t talk.

Under Johnson-Sirleaf, Corruption went up high than ever before. There were tons of bribery cases that involved brand name individuals, but yet, Johnson-Sirleaf positioned herself as being puritanical. Those corrupt individuals are walking the streets of Liberia without fear of reprisal or intimidation. It’s sad! The truth is that if she were a crime fighter, she’d do something. But nothing is being done! It speaks volumes!

During her 12-year reign, the country of Liberia did not use coins at all. Sadly, there are two different currencies, the US dollar and the Liberian dollar. No one knows why both currencies are not concurrent. In earlier times, a Liberian coin was on a par with its US counterpart. That’s not the case anymore and we may never smell a one to one equivalency in our monetary affairs.
What is even more disgraceful is the fact that the LSD is so mutilated that its hard to figure out what this or that amount really is. The markings fade.

As matters relate to her antics, Liberians in general and members of her own party in particular found themselves in a state of disorientation. The UP members of her party couldn’t waddle in her whacky world of disgrace and therefore she got expelled from their mist for good.

Let’s take a look at one of her indiscretions, if one could actually refer to it as such:
Johnson-Sirleaf did not endorse VP Boakai. Boakai is aplomb. By succeeding Johnson-Sirleaf, the flame of the UP would have been kept alive. Rather she found time to endorse a member of the opposition. In political situations it is treasonous! Frankly, her behaviour in this matter was nothing but lethargic.

On the other hand, Johnson-Sirleaf’s much needed endorsement may have been unable to put VP Boakai on top. No one knows for sure, neither does Johnson-Sirleaf herself. But by endorsing VP Boakai, she could have availed herself of the deformatory statements that are being heaped on her. The public’s trust in her persona has badly eroded. She will go down in flames! Sorry to say so, but it’s the truth and nothing but the truth.

When historians get to do her wikkipedia, Johnson-Sirleaf’s leadership during the past 12 years will be hard to write about.

  4. IT’S GOOD TO SEE LIBERIANS TAKING A POSITIVE AND DECISIVE STAND AND ACTION AGAINST THEIR OWN NEPOTISTIC AND HIGHLY CORRUPT PRESIDENT AND UNITY PARTY’S STANDARD BEARER, ELLEN JOHNSON-SIRLEAF (HER OWN PARTY)! ELLEN JOHNSON-SIRLEAF HAS BEEN “A THORN IN LIBERIA’S FLESH” SINCE TOLBERT INTRODUCED HER TO LIBERIAN GOVERNMENTAL LEADERSHIP! SHE BETRAYED AND ASSISTED IN KILLING HIM! DECEIVED AND KILLED TOM QUIWONKPAH AND SAMMY DOE! SPEARHEADED THE MASSACRES AND KILLINGS OF 250,000 LIBERIANS FROM A NEEDLESS CIVIL WAR! THEN AS PRESIDENT, ELLEN JOHNSON-SIRLEAF’S INEFFICIENCY AND LACKADAISICAL ATTITUDE TOWARDS LIBERIANS PUBLIC SAFETY, LEAD TO 1000S DYING FROM EBOLA, AND NOW SUFFERING FROM SCABIES, ETC. SIMILARLY, AS SHE BETRAYED TOLBERT, DOE, QUIWONKPAH, TAYLOR, AND NOW JOSEPH BOAKAI, IT IS GOOD TO FINALLY SEE THIS EVIL, WICKED, NEPOTISTIC WITCH, ELLEN JOHNSON-SIRLEAF, EXPELLED FROM LIBERIAN SOCIETY; SUE BY UNITY PARTY FOR MALFEASANCE, MISMANAGEMENT, AND FRAUD; AND PROSECUTED AND PUNISHED SEVERELY BY THE LIBERIAN PEOPLE FOR NEPOTISM, MALFEASANCE, AND CORRUPTION! LONG LIVE LIBERIA AND LIBERIAN PEOPLE!

  5. LET’S FORGET ABOUT THIS EVIL, NEPOTISTIC WITCH, ELLEN JOHNSON-SIRLEAF FOR A WHILE, AND READ THIS NOTICE!

COMING SOON! A NEW DAY IN SPORTS IN LIBERIA: COMING SOON . . JOSEPH J. F. CHESSON, SR. 10 MILES BICYCLE RACE, IN CAREYSBURG, LIBERIA! WINNING PRIZE US$5,000.00! LIMITED NUMBER OF ATHLETES TO REGISTER! BE IN REASONABLY GOOD PHYSICAL CONDITION(OBSTACLE COURSE)! HANDICAP AND OTHER RACES TO FOLLOW!

  6. Bah made some valid points that shouldn’t be overlooked. In minute detail, Bah states why the Unity Party was founded and the good things the party stood for during its formative years. Bah points out the philosophical difference between the old guards and the X-generation types. The X-generation types are the younger people who felt compelled to expel the disgraced 12-year Standard Bearer, Mrs. Ellen Johnson from the party. According to the thinking of the X-generation types, Johnson-Sirleaf was very disobedient and at times showed reckless disregard for the rule of law. Johnson-Sirleaf’s refusal to endorse VP Boakai and her subsequent endorsement of George Weah was and is deplorable.

In real terms, the older guards of the Unity Party are weaker than the X-generation types. Given that scenario which Bah tried to explain, I differed because I believe the Unity Party was made stronger by blasting Johnson-Sirleaf out of socket than being weak.
Looking at what’s been done by the X-generation types, it is difficult to make a comparison in the Western world. Difficult because in the US, it is unheard of to expel a party leader for his or her transgressions. What’s usually done is that a leader who has performed any kind of misdeeds usually gets isolated. Example, Pres. Richard Nixon, a deceased member of the Republican party was caught in the Watergate scandal. As horrendous as the scandal was, Nixon was not expelled from the Republican party. But, he was isolated. That isolation impacted Nixon’s character traits.
Well, the action in Liberia is foregone. Johnson-Sirleaf was not imprisoned or put under house arrest. Let’s move on. Bravo Unity Party. Demoncracy is taking hold in Liberia.

  7. ADVICE: Devote spending the money Maritime Authority raise in New York, USA to
roads network throughout the length and breath of Liberia. Do not spend that
money to public relations as did by Mrs. Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf. Of course, some of
the money ended up in individuals like first President Sirleaf’s account abroad; and
others’ accounts she used to implement that wicked corruption. Wicked because,
they spent the money as if Liberia does not need that money. Please, let the focus
of that money be for roads network; building and paving the roads throughout the
    country.
