Island Queens have become the first team in the LFA Women’s Upper Division League to be relegated before the end of the season after a 2-0 defeat against Sr. Pro at the Blue Field over the weekend.
A 2-1 win for 6th place Hippo sealed Island Queens’ fate as they slipped 10 points from safety with three games remaining.
Hippo put up a good fight against defending champions Earth Angels when they came from a goal down to secure a 2-1 victory.
Kadiatu Kamara gave Angels the lead first minute in the match, but Hippo leveled things up 12 minutes on the clock, thanks to midfielder Leda Johnson.
The winning goal was finally recorded when Gabarelli added her name to the score sheet in the 23rd minute to collect all three points for Hippo.
Island Queens have been dismally performing since the start of the season as they remain at the bottom of the table with four points from 13 games.
Bernice Willie scored both goals for Sr. Female Professionals in the 22nd and 29th minutes as they increased their points to 11 from 12 games.
Despite the win, Sr. Pro remained in the relegation zone and are now three points away from safety.
The relegation battle is now between Pro Sisters, Sr. Pro, and Hippo who are three points above relegation but need to get the needed points from their remaining three games.
