-Four Senators Vying For Presidential; VP Posts

When the polls open on October 10, 2017 for the electorate to elect a president, vice president, and 73 members of the House of Representatives, one or two seats may be left vacant for by-election(s) as four Senators vie for three presidential and a vice presidential post.

Although the election for Senators is not due until 2020, three Senators, Prince Yormie Johnson of Nimba County; George Manneh Weah of Montserrado County; and Oscar Cooper of Margibi County are on the ballot paper for the presidential race, while Bong County Senator Jewel Howard Taylor (who could become the first female Vice President of Liberia and first female President of the Senate) is the running mate to Senator Weah.

The political pendulum, however, seems to be swinging to the George Weah-Jewel Howard Taylor team of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) as reasonable contestants, while Senators Johnson, who was third in the 2011 elections, and Oscar Cooper are likely to retain their respective Senatorial seats.

Senators Weah and Johnson are representing the Liberian Senate at the ECOWAS Parliament in Abuja, and have been observed during recent Senatorial sessions sitting very close together always in deep head-to-head conversations, building speculations that the Movement for Reconstruction and Democracy party leader may support the CDC presidential hopeful in the event of a run-off.

Another record is likely to come into play in both the Lower House, where current Speaker Emmanuel Nuquay is the running mate to the current President of the Liberian Senate, Vice President Joseph Nyuma Boakai – both would become the first Speaker of the House and President of the Liberian Senate to be elected in a multi-party democratic election.
Unlike the Senate’s three presidential and one vice presidential contenders, Vice President Boakai and Speaker Nuquay are in a must-win situation with no provision to retain their respective posts.

Senators, according to the Secretary of Senate, J. Nanborlor F. Sengbeh, meanwhile, returned to Capitol Hill this morning to continue Legislative Chamber works, following two weeks of Independence Day celebrations. Ahead of their pre-Independence Day break, the Senators overwhelmingly concurred with the House of Representatives to pass the National Budget for the 2017/18 Fiscal Year in the amount of US$563,563,432 million.

  1. How could anyone in their right mind think that Prince Johnson or Oscar Cooper will be President of Liberia? Plus, George Weah is currently going to school, taking classes and reciting all his speeches for two weeks before his handlers release him to the public. This is a man who says he has a Masters’s Degree from Dokaflag University and wants to be President of Liberia. How will an illiterate man speak at the UN, AU or ECOWAS when he cannot even read or write?

  2. If what the both of you have said made any sense, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf would have not failed the nation so miserably!

    • Matilda Witherspoon! Ellen didn’t failed miserably as you described it. She had success in some areas, but not as she has been acclaimed by the international community. Most of her domestic programs failed and primarily amongst them is the fight against corruption. However, one of her success story is maintaining the peace. Secondly, the fact that you can write and speak you mind freely without fear of going to jail or be killed includes some her success stories. It is sad that she bugled down to patronage, allowed her children to form part of the decision making process. As a lady, she has always sought the opinions of men in her life to make critical decisions and Robert ill advised her in many areas.

Also, the impact of fellow progressives like Amos Sawyer, Tipoteh, Fahnbulleh, Saytuma amongst several of the people she seek advise from has also not done her any good. On the international front, Ellen elevated Liberia image in the comity of nations. Liberia debt of 4+ billions was web clean from debtors list to give the country a fresh start. At the UN, AU, ECOWAS and MU, Liberia image has been restored with leadership role in some of these organizations. Domestically, she suffered tremendous lost to the fight against corruption. It will take conviction and dedication of Liberian people to fight corruption and the next administration will have to stand much tougher.

On Weah’s ability to govern Liberia and comparing him with what Ellen failures/achievements, I’ll anytime take a failed Ellen over George Weah. I’m not sure why people keep celebrating this guy. He’s not a leader and his role can probably be suited in another area, but not the presidency of Liberia. Besides his lack of quality education he didn’t have the foundation, his DeVry degrees hasn’t help his case to be a competent person. He’s not street smart like Snowe and a lot of these young people he has hangout with. Aligning himself with Sen. Jewel Howard-Taylor has damaged his political stocks as well as his credibility with the grassroot organization he formed, the CDC. George Oppong Weah will be president of Liberia, but perhaps in the years 2072 and not now or in an immediate future. He failed to perform as a senator and imagine him governing with proxies who will steal from the Liberian people without Weah’s having a clue.

  3. in other for liberia to have a fair election there must be no election the country must have a system of god and jesus christ the apointment of the apostles of jesus christ to the president

  4. Whatever the case, the Almighty God and Jesus Christ have nothing to do with how
mankind twists and turns governmental rulership of this world under satan direction.
That is why Christians the world over are praying for the Kingdom of God to come and
remove all man rulership and be replaced with the Theocratic Government of the True
God that is able to stop sickness, oldage, corruption and all the other crimes, wars and
death and turn the whole world into a paradise earth. That is what mankind needs most.
It sounds like far fetch story enh? Looking into the Holy Bible, it is not at all!

  5. Abel James! THE PEACE IN LIBERIA STEMS NOT FROM ELLEN BUT UNIMIL! AND YOU KNOW IT!!!

HOW DARE ANYONE ATTRIBUTE PRESS FREEDOM OR FREEDOM OF SPEECH TO ELLEN AMID THE CLOSURES OF NEWSPAPERS, KILLINGS, AND JAILINGS OF WHISTLE BLOWERS, ILLEGAL JAILINGS OF RODNEY SIEH, COSTA, KEITA, PATRICKS, HARRY GREAVES, CLLR. ALLUSON, ETC.???

Put corruption aside!!! Ellen failed miserably and disgracefully in terms of just LEADERSHIP!

For example, Ellen SITTING ON HER HANDS AND NOT HAVING A CLUE FOR SEVERAL MONTHS TO COMBAT THE EBOLA EPIDEMIC.

For twelve long years Ellen kept the country’s EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM AND SCHOOLS IN AN IRREPARABLY DEPLORABLE MESS, IN spite of the billions of dollars from revenue, billions from the US, EU, CHINA, JAPAN, THE WORLD BANK, ETC.

Without any worries about national security or coups against her, viz the presence of UNIMIL, Ellen should have been able to take care of the roads and the health system. But what did she do in this area? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!

And then you attempt to attach any sanity to Ellen…a misserably failed president for which SHE IS SO HATED THROUGHOUT THE NATION, A FACT WHICH HAUNTED THE SENATORIAL CANDIDACY OF HER SON ROBERT WHO TORE NOCAL TO PIECES!

Look, the very fact that George Weah has Bern able to steer the ship of state of the coalition with the largest following all these years and has been applauded by the Press for been THE ONE to blow the alarm on the 40 years tax free exemption Ellen gave to the Farmington Hotel, are indications Weah shall do better than a very despotic Ellen who PROSECUTE THE PRESS AND MEDIA, AND DRAGS BROADCASTERS OFF AIR, SLAUGHTERS WHISTLE BLOWERS, AND RUNS A GOVERNMENT WHICH RUNS NO DIFFERENT FROM AN UNCONTROLLABLE LOCOMOTIVE!!!!
