Round Up: LFA First Division Match Day 1

LISCR striker Urey celebrates his goal against Keitrace FC.

The Liberia Football Association (LFA) new national league season opened this Monday, August 27, 2018, in Monrovia with defending champions LISCR FC kicking off their title defense with a 3-1 victory over Keitrace FC at the Antoinette Tubman Stadium.

The enthusiasm from supporters was high as thousands of them turnout at the ATS and Blue Field to watch the resumption of the national league that went on a break for over a year.

Striker Prince Urey got the curtain raiser for the “Shipping Boys” at the closing stage of the first half before Daouda Kamara got the equalizer in the 71st minute.

It became a tough moment for the Shipping Boys as the match drew to a close. Coach Tapha Manneh made two substitutions by introducing Varney Sando and midfielder Markey Morgan.

The substitutions proved vital as the defending champions increased in their attack, resulting to an own goal from Malachi Kromah and forward Sando’s late goal.

In Group B’s first match, LPRC Oilers also kick start their new league season in star with a 2-0 win over newly-promoted NPA Anchor.

Stanley Whitfield and Dominic Jarteh got the two goals for the Oilers in the second half.

In Group A, Fromer LISCR striker Trokon Myers reintroduced himself to BYC supporters at the Blue Field after slotting home the first goal in the 22nd minute. Myers last week rejoined the “Go Blue Boys” on a two-year contract after being away for two years from the club.

His goal was followed by striker Mustapha Lomell’s and Kelvin Potis’ two goals in the 59th and 90+2 minutes respectively to trash out Watanga 3-0.

In the group’s first match earlier, a late goal from goalkeeper Samson Giddings from spot kick helped Monrovia Club Breweries secure a 2-1 win against newly-promoted Small Town FC. Mistis Mulbah got the curtain raiser for Breweries two minutes on the clock before Lawrence Paygar leveled the scores in the 44mins. BYC are top of Group A on goal difference.

Six red cards were awarded on match day one, with 12 goals scored in four games.

The league will continue tomorrow, with Jubilee FC playing their opening league match against Small Town FC, while Watanga will be hoping to get their first win when they face Monrovia Club Breweries in the final match at the ATS in Group A.

In Group B fixtures, LISCR FC will go against NPA Anchors at the ATS, while LPRC Oilers will take on Nimba United at the Kakata Sports Stadium.

  1. Thanks to some stake holders of football in Liberia for bringing back the National League. In the absence of the National League, other young aspiring Liberian footballers will not have a platform to achieve their dreams.
