Bomi County Electoral District #1 Representative, Cllr. Samuel Gayah Karmo has strongly reacted to the presence of Montserrado District #6 Representative, Edwin Melvin Snowe in the county’s politics by referring to him as a non-issue.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with the Daily Observer on Monday at his residence in Brewerville, outside Monrovia, he said Rep. Snowe is a Liberian citizen and has the right as guaranteed by the Constitution to live anywhere but people’s identity – be it tribal or sectional – should not be compromised for “mere offers, which in most cases come in cash and non-lasting material benefits.”

“I am seeking re-election to the capitol from my people because I have done well in meeting the criteria of proper representation, oversight, among others,” Rep. Karmo noted.
“As a representative I was able to lobby for the passage of a bill to establish the Bomi Community College, the elevation of its budget from US$150,000 to US$600,000, the construction of Sackie Town Magisterial Court, the County Judicial Complex to host judges,” he said, adding that a couple of bridges on major routes in the county which were in bad conditions have been rebuilt and dedicated.

He said Bomi citizens will have no one else to blame but themselves if they make the mistake to elect Rep. Snowe who he said has failed his constituents in Montserrado County.
“This is only telling me that the moral compass has disappeared from Liberia. Snowe who is still receiving salaries and benefits as a lawmaker for another district is jumping an unnecessary gun in another place where he has made no impact except for his personal reasons,” Karmo noted.

He said his politics is not about personality but what is lacking is the understanding that should Rep. Snowe succeed, he will dump all those who are unduly glorifying him.
“The palm trees he has planted will not be for the benefit of any Bomi citizen but himself and his friends and family. He will sell to big companies and use the same money to pay our people peanuts so that they may continue to needlessly labor for him,” he said, calling on all citizens of his District and the county in general to be mindful of short-lived campaigns intended to put them at loggerheads as a people with a common identity.

Rep. Karmo said, “not everything that is legal is expedient and not everything that is expedient is legal. Snowe’s interference in Bomi politics is an assault on the county but not too many of our people are yet schooled to the actual meaning of common identity,” he pointed out, commending Senator Sando D. Johnson for taking the lead in condemning what he called “Snowe’s disabuse of a Constitutional right.”

He said unity has disappeared from Bomi. “Even our Caucus, we are not united and as such we don’t have much voice to influence the decisions of our people if they are in contrast to peace and harmony,” he said.

Rep. Karmo called for the teaching of civics and Bible in schools so as to allow students to know the functions of government and learn the moral values that uphold the good of society.

Although he did not say as to whether he will run on a party’s ticket or go as an independent candidate, he expressed his conviction that as a champion he will continue his job after the October elections.

“I may not have money as some other people around here but I have the drive and ultimate desire to always make change for the good a priority. I will run and win, no matter who is in the race with me in Senjeh District,” he noted.

It may be recalled that Senator Sando D. Johnson and Rep. Edwin M. Snowe were involved in a war of words over his (Snowe’s) desire to contest as a representative in Senjeh district come October 10.

Sen. Johnson vowed to give his blood if need be to ensure that Snowe is not elected representative for Senjeh District while Snowe, on the other hand, termed Johnson as one suffering from a mental problem and needs serious psychiatric attention.

  1. There is growing evidence that the views of voters and politicians on economic issues are different. If you analyze the causes and consequences of this ideological inconsistency, it has implications for the quality of democratic representation and citizens’ political behaviour: as established parties offer either left-wing or right-wing packages of policies, citizens with ideologically inconsistent views cannot find a party that offers a policy package that matches their policy preferences. Therefore they may become dissatisfied with a democratic system that cannot represent them and therefore they are less likely to turn out to vote. Voters with ideologically inconsistent preferences are like vegetarians in a fish restaurant. They can get potatoes and cod or salad and salmon, but they cannot order potatoes and salad. Such restaurant guests are likely to be dissatisfied with the menu and are unlikely to eat at the restaurant again. The kind of division I am reading about on here regarding the divisiveness within the Bomi’s caucus could affects the county’s interest in these general elections and the political history of the nation. Therefore this single case of Rep. Snowe may be relevant to understanding patterns of voter opinion about economic issues in Bomi. All the best and further hard work for the people of Bomi and Lineria

  2. Now the Liberian people HOW AND WHY non-restricted citizenship and dual citizenship are ARE VERY BAD and can be used by people AGAINST OUR PEOPLE.

In other words, a Lebanese, Chinese, Indian, or a Causian would simply use his money to carry out such abuse, agression, and utter disrespect, against our people!

That is a causian or a Chinese would simply go and use our people labour to get rich in say Sinoe or Cape Mount, or Lofa or Nimba and decides to rule them just as this boy Edwin Snowe has decided to insult our people!

I am now calling on the clergy, the students, workers, farmers, fishernen, scholars, and traditional leaders of our home state Bomi to tell this boy who got rich from state funds at LPRC that he is going too far and he must make an ABOUT-FACE IMMEDIATELY!

  3. Now the Liberian people WILL NOW KNOW HOW AND WHY non-restricted citizenship and dual citizenship are ARE VERY VERY BAD and can be used by people AGAINST OUR PEOPLE!!!

In other words, a Lebanese, Chinese, Indian, or a Causian would simply use his money to carry out such abuse, agression, and utter disrespect, against our people! Just as some rascal from Monrovia shall use his dual citizenship cash as Snowe wants to do. The only difference would be while Snowe got his cash via theft, the rascal from Monrovia with his dual citizenship may earn his money via honesty and hard work. But that does not make his abuse different from that of Snowe or the Lebanese.

  4. Countries that do not allow dual citizenship
Andorra. Andorrans who take up a foreign citizenship lose their Andorran nationality, but can apply to have it reinstated later if they are willing to renounce the citizenship they took up. Foreigners shouldn’t need to worry about this procedure, since becoming a naturalized citizen of Andorra takes twenty years of residence, one of the longest periods on earth.
Austria. Austria severely limits dual nationality in the country. This is interesting, considering there is a “secret” economic citizenship program that allows wealthy investors to become Austrian citizens in exchange for a donation of several million dollars — so long as they can prove they are “Austrian enough”. The only exceptions to these restrictions are 1) for children born to one Austrian and one foreign parent whose country confers citizenship to children, 2) to children given foreign citizenship by virtue of being born in a foreign country (like the United States), 3) to those unable by law to renounce their existing citizenship at home, or 4) to foreign professors who receive Austrian nationality.
Azerbaijan. The Azeri government claims to automatically strip citizenship from those who voluntarily obtain another nationality.
Bahrain. While the Kingdom of Bahrain has a long tradition of awarding citizenship to expats who make a substantial contribution to the tiny Middle Eastern country, Bahrain does forbid dual nationality, except for a few Gulf state passport holders.
China. China technically forbids dual nationality, but many Chinese tell me enforcement of this is weak. They also mention that China considers Chinese citizens to be only Chinese, in line with the policy of most countries including the United States. China technically doesn’t recognize dual citizenship, but isn’t chasing people down, particularly as they encourage legal immigration to spread Chinese influence.
Djibouti. Djibouti does not recognize its citizens’ ability to hold another passport, and any citizen who obtains another nationality will lose his or her Djibouti passport. Enforcement, however, is another matter.
El Salvador. El Salvador allows for dual citizenship, but only for those who obtained El Salvadorean nationality by birth. Naturalized citizens may not hold multiple nationalities.
Estonia. Although not technically allowed, plenty of Estonians hold second passports, mainly from Russia. The Estonian government may allow naturalized citizens to keep existing citizenships, or may simply not check. However, naturalized citizens who obtain another citizenship after being naturalized will lose their Estonian nationality. Native born Estonians are not subject to this provision, however, because Estonian citizenship is determined “by blood” and cannot be taken away from anyone.
Georgia. Georgia does not allow dual citizenship for natural born citizens, or those naturalized under normal means. It does, however, allow for dual citizenship for those naturalized by “exceptional means”.
India. Does India allow dual nationality? Sadly, the answer is “no”. However, due to demands from its diaspora, the country did introduce the Overseas Citizenship of India program. The program offers a document that looks like a passport, but does not serve as a substitute for a travel document, nor does it confer Indian citizenship.
Indonesia. While Indonesian officials are working to allow citizens to hold multiple nationalities, no such law exists yet, and Indonesians may not hold other citizenships.
Japan does not allow dual citizenship
Japan does not allow its citizens to owe allegiance to another country.
Japan. Japan is one of strictest immigration countries on earth. It does not allow citizens to maintain other allegiances and forces children who hold more than one passport to choose which one they wish to retain once they become adults.
Kazakhstan. Kazakhstan does not allow citizens to maintain another nationality, and is one of a handful of countries that automatically cancels your citizenship if you are discovered to be a dual national.
Lithuania. Lithuania offers citizenship by descent to those with Lithuanian great-grandparents, but requires all Lithuanians to choose between their citizenship and another nationality. The only exception is those with ancestors who left during times of occupation for reasons of persecution..
Malaysia. Although I recommend the MM2H visa program for residency, I cannot recommend becoming a citizen since anyone holding Malaysian citizenship is disallowed from holding any other citizenship.
Montenegro. While there have been talks to allow dual nationality between Serbians and Montenegrins (in light of the two countries’ being one until 2006), citizens of Montenegro are forbidden to hold other citizenships and will lose their citizenship if they are naturalized elsewhere.
Netherlands*. In general, Dutch citizenship forbids obtaining an additional nationality. However, there are exceptions for Dutch people who obtain another citizenship at birth, or who are live in a country they hold nationality of thanks to their spouse.
Nepal. Nepal does not allow having another citizenship.
Norway. While Norway offers one of the world’s most valuable passports, it generally does not allow Norwegian citizens, or those naturalized to become Norwegian, to hold an additional citizenship. The only general exception is for those whose former countries refuse to release them from a prior citizenship.
Poland. Poland does not recognize its citizens who maintain other allegiances, but it tolerates the practice. However, there are cases where “exercising a second citizenship” is disallowed, such as identifying yourself to Polish authorities as a foreign citizen.
Saudi Arabia. Obtaining dual nationality is only permitted with the express permission of the Prime Minister.
Singapore.Singapore has been a much-ballyhooed second passport in the offshore world, with claims that citizenship can be obtained in as little as two years. That opportunity is no longer available. Plus, Singaporean citizenship confers mandatory military service on the citizen as well as their children. In an attempt to protect the “fabric” of their small country, Singapore aggressively forbids dual nationality.
Slovakia*. As part of an argument with Hungary over its citizenship by descent policies, Slovakia limits dual citizenship in many cases. It does, however, allow dual nationalities for those that obtain its passport through birth or marriage.
Tanzania. While some officials in the African country have suggested loosening the policy, Tanzanians are currently not permitted to hold dual citizenship, except in the case of women who acquire a second nationality by marrying a foreigner. The country’s Asian immigrant population is often cited as a factor for “potential disloyalty” if the citizenship rules were to be loosened.
Thailand does not allow dual citizenship
Though it is known as the Land of Smiles, Thailand frowns upon dual citizenship and strictly forbids it.
Thailand. As one of the most insular and imperious countries on earth, Thailand forbids dual nationality. They are “The Land of the Free”, after all.
Ukraine. Currently, Ukraine does not easily allow for dual citizenship. They even considered imposing prison sentences of up to ten years for having dual nationality. It’s possible to have another nationality, but if the government finds out, you could be in trouble.
United Arab Emirates. Emirati passport holders are forbidden to maintain other citizenships. The only exception is in cases when an individual holds another citizenship from birth, but also has a father who is a UAE national and who confers citizenship upon him or her.
Venezuela. While children born on Venezuelan soil are entitled to Venezuelan citizenship (regardless of their parents’ nationalities), dual citizenship is only possible until age 25. After that time, if an individual maintains a foreign citizenship, the Venezuelan nationality will be terminated.

  5. This honorable gentleman is trying to uplift the general welfare of the folks in Bomi with good intentions and they are fighting him based on hate and jealousy. Is Liberia not a democratic nation? Let the citizens of Bomi decide who they choose to represent them.

To Zoedjallah, on the dual citizenship issue, You need to understand the facts, it was Liberians in the diasporas, especially in the US, yes Liberians with US citizenships that lobby their representatives to help end the war, in addition supported families with remittances from aboard, which had direct impact on the economy during the civil strife. Didn’t our people before us slave for that country? We had a serious civil War, remember. Dual citizenship will be beneficial to Liberia, this is a no brainer.

Finally, to the citizens of Bomi, please give Snowe a chance and if he doesn’t live up to your expectations you have the power of the vote him out. Don’t listen to these representatives that have fail you, what have they done? Snowe has good intentions for Bomi, judge him on his merits.

    God bless

  6. IF “Liberians in the diasporas, especially in the US, yes Liberians with US citizenships that lobby their representatives to help end the war”, THEN THE WAR WOULD HAVE NEVER LASTED THAT LONG, NOR WOULD THE WAR STILL BE GOING ON IN SOMALIA AND THE DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO.

DUAL CITIZENSHIP IS NO USE TO LIBERIA BUT ABSOLUTELY A SCHEME THAT WOULD MAKE THE MAJORITY OF OUR PEOPLE 2ND CLASS PEOPLE IN THEIR OWN COUNTIES AND FAMILIES.

WHAT WE NEED TO DO IS STRUCTURE A MORE EQUAL NATIONAL ECONOMY WITH REGARDS TO THE MAJOR SOURCES OF OUR ECONOMY —MINING, MARITIME, AGRICULTURE,TAXATION, ETC., AND EQUALITY IN INCOMES, AND NOT DEPEND ON HANOUTS FROM DIASPORA.

EDWIN SNOWE CAN NEVER BEAT SAM KARMO IN THAT PARTICULAR DISTRICT.

NO NO NO IMPOSSIBLE. KARMO IS TOO POPULAR TO BE BEATEN IN BOMI HILLS OR ANY PART OF BOMI BY AN OUTSIDER.

EDWIN SNOWE COULD EASILY BEAT SOMEONE IN MANO RIVER WHERE HE WAS BORN OR IN BASSA HIS HOME COUNTY. AND THIS IS WHY SAM KARMO SAYS EDWIN IS A NON-ISSUE ION BOMI POLITICS.

  7. What is the fear from your own people in the diaspora? What are your expectations for development in the various counties? Other nations are developing their own land. Do you expect them to develope Liberia and don’t reap the benefits? How do you expect to equalize the economy from the different majors sectors you mentioned. It’s only possible, mainly from Liberian living home and abroad. It is a proven fact based on countries that experience civil unrest around the world but especially in Africa.

Dual citizenship will provide checks and balances because some of us abroad will not stand to see corruption prevail, keeping our people into abject poverty. The disease of corruption has to cease to exist. We are a different generation that is willing to embrace the rule of law and accountability so that we can develop an economy that will lift the general welfare for every Liberians

Finally, in reference to the Bomi race, the expectations here is who will be the most effective and dynamic candidate, able to deliver services for the people of Bomi County. This is not a talent or a popularity contest. This race should be base on merits and substance, the candidate that has the best economic policies that will elevate the living standard of the people of Bomi. In my view, Mr. Snowe has that vision because I think the people of Bomi has seen some level development in terms of investments and jobs from Mr. Snowe into Bomi County. This race should be based on merit and substance as previously mentioned and not on base on tribalism but the candidate that exhibits the vision and is ready to fight for a bright future of our beloved Bomi County. So let us keep out tribalism and sectionalism in terms of majority and monority and promote Liberia for Liberians to ensure equality and accountability. Because in union strong, success is sure, with God above our rights to prove, we will overall prevail.

  8. If you ever had the opportunity to have been schooled in POLITICAL ECONOMY 101 you would not say equalizing the economy from the different majors sectors” is contingent on “mainly Liberian living home and abroad.” My friend, its contingent on the international relations of nations which is spearheaded by GOVERNMENTS under MODERN TREATY LAW AND PRACTICE. IT HAS ABSOLUTELY NO LIGAMENTS NOR LINK TO CITIZENS NOR FORMER CITIZENS WHO HAVE GIVEN THEIR ALLEGIANCE TO ANOTHER NATION! AS A MATTER OF FACT, DUAL CITIZEN HUSTLERS ARE LIABILITIES. FOR EXAMPLE: ELLEN COCKRUM, JEROME KORKOYAH, AND THE MANY OTHERS NOW ON THE RUN.

My friend, YOU DO NOT KNOW US GOLA PEOPLE! WE DO NOT give elected offices to OUTSIDERS! NOT even to people of different ethnicities who were born there! Snowe is simply wasting his time and money. Not to talk about the fact, that Garyah Karmo is an offspring of the legendary king of Bomi … KING NJOLAH, and has whole lot of influence on voters and has been their representative who has done so well for them. The people will eat Snowe´s money, eat his food, drink his gin, and even dance before him and retort to Snowe: “this Bassa man think we are stupid!”, and vote for their own – Sam karmo!

  9. Black eagle, have you forgotten that it is the very Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Charles Taylor, Tom Woewiyu, Amos Sawyer, and Harry Greaves Jr. who Ellen is widely expected of killing and their diaspora gang which brought the war, mass slaughter and destruction of the country? Is this what you call accountability and developmet when people will sit abroad put a whole nation on fire instead of using the ballot box for power?

  10. A nation devided unto itself shall not stand. Our diversity should be our strength to guarantee equal protection under the law with justice and liberty for all.

To Tamba; At the time, those individuals mentioned were duly elected by the people on the ground. You guys made an educated choice, so don’t whine about the outcome. Liberians in the diaspora send remittances and lobby international organizations for support without any tribalistic sentiment. It was based on common human decency and love of country. Now that the guns are silenced, we are not entitled and have no rights. Remember.

To Joedjallah: if you keep electing leaders based on Tribalism, you are bound to get the same result. Ignorance, proverty and disease.
Sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity still dominates over common sense and decency in Liberia. If Liberians living abroad meddled to investment $10,000.000, into Bomi County economy to create jobs, thereby elevating the people’s standard of living. What will be you guys input? You mentioned, “YOU DONT KNOW US GOLA PEOPLE, WE DONT GIVE ELECTED OFFICES TO OUTSIDERS” So, will our investments be considered outsiders’ money? (your words, not mine)

Again, will the people eat our food and drink our gin and fool us? Do you speak for the rest of the people of Bomi County? I don’t think so, Do you love the Gola people, enough? If you professed loving the people of Bomi, you should allow them to choose without any tribalistic sentiments, who they desire to lead them. Let democracy prevail.

  11. Bomi does not need any investment from job-seeking dual citizenship hustlers! Our county is one of the richest counties in Liberia with very huge reserves of such natural resources as iron ore, rubber, timber, diamond, gold, etc.etc. Multinational companies and other world investers are in cue to begin operations shortly! You job-seeking dual citizenship hustlers should invest your 10,000,000 within those countries to which you have given your allegiance!

  12. The good people of Bomi doesn’t subscribe to your selfish mentality and decisive politics. The goal is a development agenda that will develop Liberia for all its citizens. Bomi cannot be an Island of prosperity in the sea of dispair. You have a disdain for peace and reconciliation and exhibits a lot of tribal insecurities to be part of our Bomi development agenda. I’m assuming, that you do not have the necessary resources available, so I would suggest that you step aside so that we can bring the necessary development needed to develop our beloved country and uplift the living standards of all our people including Bomi Couty. There are 3 kinds of people, in this world, those who want things to happen, those who watch things happen and those make things happen. By your fruit, I can predict, You watching and waiting but can’t make or create because your resources is very scares. How many jobs have created for the people of Bomi lately? So, allow us the potential investors, waitings to come and create jobs after elections. My suggestion to you is stop, being an impediment to the progress that is coming to make this great county a better place for all of its citizens.

    Be blessed

  13. THE PEOPLEN OF BOMI HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR A GOOD LEADER THAT WILL BRING GOOD DEVELOPMENT SUCH AS: HIGH CLASS EDUCATIONAL STANDARD, DESCEND SANITATION, JOB FACILITIES, GOOD HEALTH CENTERS AND CHANGE THE ENVIROMENT OF BOMI AS WELL FOR THE BENEFITS OF ITS CITIZENS.
SO, LET US STOP ENBARRASING THIS MAN GOD HAD SEND TO RESCUTE THE PEOPLE OF THIS SOIL. BECAUSE THERE ARE LOTS OF SENATORS, REPRESENTATIVES THAT ARE BEEN RULING AND FAIL TO CARRY ON THEIIR OBLIGATIONS BY DOING WHAT HON. SNOWE IS DOING AND HAVE TO DO FOR THE FUTURE.
SO THE PEOPLE OF DISTRICT #2 OF BOMI PLEASE FOCUS ON HON. EDWIN MELVIN SNOWE, REPRESENTATIVE IN WAITING, CAUSE YOUR DREAMS HAS COME TO REALITY.
SIGNED: citizen of SONODEE TOWN, Suehn Mecca District (DISTRICT#3)
