Liberian referee Hassan Corneh has been selected by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) as one of the match officials that will take charge of the upcoming 2021 Africa U-17 Cup of Nations Championship.
The tournament will run between March 13-31 in Morocco. Ref. Corneh is among 36 match officials (18 center referees and 18 assistants) from across the continent that were selected for the tournament.
This will be the second international youth tournament that Ref. Corneh will officiate in after he was selected to officiate in the 2020 WAFU U-20 Championship in Senegal.
Corneh has been selected to officiate in several international tournaments, including CAFConfederation Cup and AFCON Qualifiers. His selection comes a few weeks after two Liberian referees, Moses Forkpa and Joel W. Doe were selected to officiate in the WAFU U-17 tourney in Senegal.
Meanwhile the draw for the tournament was conducted on Wednesday, 24 February 2021 in Nouakchott, Mauritania with hosts Morocco kicking off against Uganda in the opening match in Rabat on 13 March.
This will be the first edition in Africa’s U-17 Cup of Nations to have expanded to 12 teams instead of eight. The top four teams of the tournament would have normally qualified for the 2021 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Peru as the CAF representatives. However, FIFA decided on 24 December 2020 to cancel the tournament due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
