Debbah to Join CDC

Liberia’s former celebrated football star, James Salinsa Debbah has tendered his resignation from the Liberty Party (LP) and finally decided to join the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC).

The Mighty Barrolle’s football legend told the Daily Observer in an exclusive phone interview Tuesday, March 4, that final negotiations to formally join CDC would be concluded this week.

Salinsa said the program marking his declaration to the “mighty CDC” would be held over the weekend at the party’s headquarters depending upon the arrival of the party‘s political leader, Amb. George M. Weah, in the country.

Mr. Debbah was LP’s leading campaigner amongst the youth because of his popularity in football and his involvement with the ruling Unity Party (UP). He had condemned his cousin, George Weah, for challenging Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf during the 2005 Presidential Elections.

Debbah said Mr. Weah was “unfit” for the Presidency and did not have what it took to head that office.

The football star said he is confident about becoming Senator for Grand Bassa County in the 2014 Special Senatorial Election.

He believes his success is guaranteed by the love the people of Grand Bassa have for him.

Debbah told the Daily Observer that his official switch to the CDC will happen before his petition ceremony, scheduled for next month.

"I have finally decided to join CDC and soon will do so formally, after doing the paper work,” Mr. Debbah said.

Reports say Debbah joined the CDC because he was snubbed by LP after declaring his interest in the 2014 Senatorial Race.

Grand Bassa County District # 3 Representative, Jeh Byron Brown, is said to be favored as the Liberty Party’s candidate.

Friends close to Debbah, say the soccer star considers his rejection a “stab in the back,” considering all he contributed over the years.

Known as 'Salinsa' during his football playing days, Debbah is regarded as Liberia's most popular football personality after George Manneh Weah, FIFA 1995 World Player of the Year and African football legend.
