The Nigerian Embassy near Monrovia said its attention has been drawn to a front page false story in The People newspaper of yesterday, December 17, with the banner headline “Diplomatic Sourness-Nigerian President Chastises His Liberian Counterpart”.

“The story amongst other lies, claims that Nigeria President, His Excellency Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR, described his Liberia counterpart as a ‘hypocrite and a leader with double standard’,” the Embassy said in a release.

According to the Nigerian Embassy, the newspaper’s source — one Mr. Okechukwu, who they said is the personal assistant to the Nigerian Ambassador in Monrovia, doesn’t work with embassy.

“The Embassy wishes to state categorically that the Ambassador does NOT have a Personal Assistant and that the Embassy of Nigeria in Liberia does NOT have any staff called Mr. Okechukwu,” they clarified.

“The Ambassador is the only accredited representative of President Jonathan in Liberia and as such is the only official of Nigerian government in Liberia with the mandate to speak on behalf of the President of Nigeria.”

The Embassy said the paper’s “false” publication is reckless and irresponsible and is aimed at injuring Nigerian-Liberia long standing, growing and friendly relations.

“The two Presidents have the utmost respect for each other and have related with one another in the same manner. This type of junk journalism must be condemned in all its ramifications and its authors sanctioned to the fullest extent of the law,” they said.

They assured the public that the Embassy under the watch of the Ambassador will continue to work with host authorities with a view to further strengthening the strong ties that bind the two countries for the benefit of both Nigerians and Liberians.
