The National Elections Commission (NEC) will today Wednesday, August 5, begin a two-day conference for political parties and civil society organizations (CSOs) on lessons learnt from the 2014 Special Senatorial Election.
The conference is intended to grant political parties and the CSOs the opportunity to evaluate the 2014 Special Senatorial Election, and elicit recommendations to guide the Commission in managing future electoral processes.
The forum is organized in collaboration with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES).
The objective is to identify and document stakeholders’ perspectives on the successes and challenges of the Special Senatorial Election as well as analyze the various political, legal and social issues that interplayed during the election and assess the impact of decisions that emanated from such issues on the electoral process.
The conference, according to a release, will look at three thematic areas to include findings from observer institutions, including the work of the NEC and the role played by political parties and civil society; information and media outreach and women’s participation in the electoral process.
About 80 participants are expected to attend the conference which will be held at the headquarters of the Commission in Monrovia.
