Francis S. Nyumalin, the man who won the just ended Lofa County Electoral District #1 by-election on the ticket of Union of Liberian Democrat (ULD), was yesterday certificated by the National Elections Commission (NEC).
Mr. Nyumalin obtained 3,149 votes representing 32 percent, followed by William T. Kamba of the Movement for Economic Empowerment, who obtained 2,996 votes, representing 30.5 percent, at the February 28 polls in Lofa County.
The total valid votes cast stood at 9,832 with invalid votes totaling 771, bringing to the total of 10,603 voters who turned out in District #1 by-election in Lofa County.
Earlier, the runner-up, Mr. Kamba, protested the outcome of the by-election on grounds that the 771 invalid votes were “alarming.” However, he later withdrew his protest, which prompted the certification of Mr. Nyumalin.
In another development, NEC says it has completed the payment of over 8,000 contract employees who served during the nationwide voter registration exercise.
Meanwhile, NEC has announced March 20 as the deadline for the submission of petition listings for independent candidates.
