 -Says he’s “not qualified to run for president”

After a successful launch of the Coalition for Democratic Change political campaign on Saturday in Monrovia, the National Movement to support Boakai (NAMBO), yesterday announced that it has discovered that Senator George Weah holds an American Passport as an American and therefore he is not qualified to run for political office.

Chapter 22 of the Alien and Nationality Law of Liberia prohibits Liberian citizens from dual citizenship, or engaging in certain acts in foreign countries such as joining the armed forces or voting in elections.

The Alien and Nationality Law came into effect on May 15, 1973, with amendments on May 9, 1974. This statute also draws inspiration from Article 28 of the Constitution which states in relevant parts that “No citizen of the Republic shall be deprived of citizenship or nationality except as provided by law, and no person shall be denied the right to change citizenship or nationality.”

The law is clear at section 22.1 that “A person who is a citizen of Liberia whether by birth or naturalization, shall lose [their] citizenship…” by deliberately or consciously performing certain acts like naturalizing in a foreign country; pledging allegiance to a foreign country or a part of a foreign country; joining the armed services of a foreign country without the prior approval of the President of Liberia; voting in a political or sovereignty election in a foreign state or territory; and making a formal renunciation of Liberian nationality.
NAMBO said Senator Weah’s American passport has his surname WEAH and other names GEORGE MANNEH with his passport photograph clearly in evidence.

His date of birth on the passport is recorded as Oct. 1. 1966.

The Boakai support group revealed at a crowded press conference yesterday that the American Passport acquired by Senator Weah and the issuance dated was May 3, 2013, and will expire on May 2, 2023. The passport number is 5052523219.

Robert Kpadeh, NAMBO’s secretary-general said the evidence of dual nationality should be the legal ground to disqualify him from contesting the upcoming presidential elections.

NAMBO said it has already submitted the case to its legal counsel, Cllr. Benedict Sannoh, who will advise its next course of action.

“We have obtained a tangible document indicating that Senator Weah is an American citizen, and this is somebody who is respected in our body politics, and such document is a mockery of democracy,” Kpadeh said.

He noted that the revelation shows that Weah is in violation of the laws of Liberia, adding that the Montserrado County Senator should abandon his quest for the Liberian presidency and also resign his post as Senator of Montserrado County.

However, in reaction to the report, the office of the Senator Weah yesterday told the Daily Observer via mobile phone that it would robustly address itself to “NAMBO’s trash” at a later date.

  1. If NEC Chairman was not disqualified or removed from office for being an American citizen then on what grounds will Mr. Weah be disqualified? You are simply increasing Mr. Weah popularity by doing this. NAMBO should invest its energy in campaigning for Hon. Boakai to win the forth coming elections.He has the experience and qualification to his advantage. The just ended debate puts him in a comfortable position. To disqualify Mr. Weah at this point will only lead to serious setback in the democratic process.

    • Just too late NAMBO. The Supreme Court did declare NEC Chairman legally eligible to maintain his position as NEC Chairman irrespective of his active American Passport. So please tell your Opposition Research Guys to find another story if possible. Hahaha, sweet and thanks to the Supreme Court. Do not
      be nervous NAMBO, you are based right in Monrovia, just march for victory so the whole world can witness your numerical strength too, please do.

  2. Do you think Weah will EVER admit his American Citizenship? Please. Jack’s drunk, but he’s NOT stupid!

    In all three branches of the Liberian government, there are many government officials, including Senator Weah, who hold American passports. But.don’t expect to admit or renounce their American citizenship,
    Why?
    Because, God forbid, when shit hit the fan in Liberia, their American passport will come in handy. They will be the FIRST to jump on the plane out of Liberia! Self preservation is the first law of nature! But Liberia’s low information voters don’t think that law applies to Weah, their savior!

  3. NAMBO, that is not a new news. The fake picture appeared about a year ago and it died down, You are just seeing it? Nothing will happen, you know that right? You are not the first nor will be the last to believe that story.

  5. For those who are anti- dual citizenship for Liberia, what is your take on this? Seems like the flood gate for dual citizenship had been opened all along; some are just playing catch-up…

  6. First of all, a passport number is between six and nine alphanumeric characters, meaning it can be made up of numbers, letters or a combination of both.

    I guess NAMBO did not get the memo that laws does not apply in Liberia. The guy (NEC Chairman) that’s suppose to have spearheaded the vetting process carries an American Passport so what your case is?

    Stop crying foul and come up with a better strategy because time is running out and Weah is not the only presidential candidate carrying a U.S. Passport.

    Just My Opinion!

  7. Oh Oh, no comment. Will wait and follow the outcome. But to you Mr. Elijah Taylor, the NEC chairman is not running to be President of Liberia. My advice to you and me, let’s wait and see. But if this is true, I will advise Hon Weah to keep his Senatorial Job and move on. If he insists, the passport information can easily be confirmed or attested to under the United States Freedom of Information ACT (FOIA). Any (Liberian) naturalized U.S. citizen in the United States can write the United States Department of State and request the information pursuant to FOIA. The Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. § 552, is a federal freedom of information law that allows for the full or partial disclosure of information and documents controlled by the United States government. Since 1967, the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) has provided the public the right to request access to records from any federal agency. It is often described as the law that keeps citizens in the know about their government. United States Citizens are the only ones that can make such request. The only thing that cannot be attached to the (FOIA) information requested is criminal records. No information about criminal record can be requested

    You see, if Liberia passes the dual citizenship law, we won’t have most of the problems we have. now. I strongly suggest that Danthey take a look at Ghana dual citizenship law. We can borrow something from them. Under Ghana dual citizenship law, a Ghanian by birth who is naturalized in any country (with dual citizenship) can hold any position in Ghana except for the following listed below. Please read:
    Multiple citizenship

    (1) A citizen of Ghana may hold the citizenship of any other country in addition to his citizenship of Ghana.[10]

    (2) Without prejudice to article 94(2)(a) of the Constitution, no citizen of Ghana shall qualify to be appointed as a holder of any office specified in this subsection if he/she holds the citizenship of any other country in addition to his/her citizenship of Ghana—
    Multiple Citizenship with Ghanaian passport Identity Document

    (a) Chief Justice and Justices of the Supreme Court;
    (b) Ambassador or High Commissioner;
    (c) Secretary to the Cabinet; (Minister)
    (d) Chief of Defence Staff or any Service Chief;
    (e) Inspector-General of Police;
    (f) Commissioner, Custom, Excise and Preventive Service;
    (g) Director of Immigration Service;
    (h) Commissioner, Value Added Tax Service;
    (i) Director-General, Prisons Service;
    (j) Chief Fire Officer;
    (k) Chief Director of a Ministry;
    (l) the rank of a Colonel in the Army or its equivalent in the other security services; and
    (m) any other public office that the President may by legislative instrument prescribe.[10]

    This will close all the loopholes and make Liberia born citizens who have obtained other citizenship elsewhere (with a lot of experience and expertise) to come home and work under some of our Ministers, Directors, and members of the Legislature to help them (become proficient) do their job instead of them hiring family members who have no experience. A dual citizen Liberian can run to be a Legislature in any of the two houses or can become Superintendent. Look at the U.S Legislatures in session, the people that you see sitting behind them are their eyes, ears, and researchers. His or her staff. These are the people that advise the Legislatures.
    Stop being afraid of Liberians coming from overseas. They’re not coming to take your jobs. They want to help.

  8. correction: it should have read you see, if Liberia passes the dual citizenship law, we won’t have most of the problems we have now. I strongly suggest that they take a look at Ghana dual citizenship law.

  9. Please be advised that information about the U. S. FOIA and Ghana dual citizenship law was copied and pasted from the U.S. Government and Ghana government web sites.

    • Kubah, what did you eat this morning? You have a lot of energy to write that long comment.

      The current Liberian president is an American citizen. The NEC chairman is an American citizen. It’s possible that Boakai Joseph is an American citizen.
      And countless others are American citizens in the Ellen government. Da only Weah your see?

      Wasn’t Joseph Jenkins Robert an American citizen?

  10. Liberians are not prepare to give credence to #Confused Robert Kpadeh and his so-called NAMBO. If Kpadeh so love Joseph Boakai, he should go campaign. For us at CDC, our focus is the registrants not cheap propaganda

  11. Daily Observer, with this article that you published it proves that you are taking side in this election. first of all, this is not a new story. secondly, this same passport data page and accusation was published in 2011 and 2014. thirdly, the so-called passport data page was done by photoshop. I advise, that you do a serious investigation before you publish anything. if most media houses in Liberia were to be in the US, they would have been closed down as a result of lawsuits for defamation of character because they will pay through their nose.

    Daily Observer, why did I say you are taking side in this election? Because you are one of the paper that never published CDC campaign on Saturday. The New Dawn Daily Independent published it and never added the photos of the campaign to their article and after one day, they pulled down the article from their website.

    When you allow yourself to be used because for “GRAVY” you will lose credibility even from the people that use you.

    “A word is enough for the wise”

    I will advise that your reportage be balanced for all political parties in this election, if it is, you gain credibility and your patronage will increase.

  12. 15. It is very laughable that after all the endorsements from the Legislature, this county, and that county, and that group, and the ochestration of the so called debate which out of 24 presidential candidates only four candidates attended, Boakai and his NAMBO would end up with such a DEFEATIST STRATEGY. BOAKAI AND HIS NAMBO HAVE SIMPLY BEEN CONVINCED FROM THE REACTION OF THE ELECTORATE VIZ THE SO CALLED DEBATE THAT DEBATE NO DEBATE, GEORGE MANNEH WEAH SHALL BE INAGURATED AS THE 25TH PRESIDENT OF LIBERIA IN JANUARY 2018, AS BOAKAI GOES INTO OBLIVION WITH HIS DEAD UNITY PARTY!!!

  16. Who is the hypocrite here Bro. Kpadeh? I am sure you’re well aware that Mr. cummings is a self-confessed American citizen whom you choose not to question. This is discriminatory; assuming that your allegations against Sen. Weah were true. The very Constitution calls for all to be treated under the law. Also I hope you would or have reviewed the naturalization papers of people you hire as lawyers to represent you in this case, because our laws also state that no foreigner should practice law in Liberia. I also hope that you will ask the VP to step out of the race because I am sure you are aware that one of his parents is not Liberian. As such, at age 18 he should have declared his citizenship as required by law. Shamelessly also, you are filing your complaint with a Commission whose Chair and other member’s citizenship would be drawn into question when your case is being heard. By law you are allowed to prove your case. I am just hinting you of the huddles that will come your way I am sure at the appropriate time and place the Sen. will prove his side of the story.

  17. This is not a case as over 48% of Liberian government officials hold dual citizenship. Senator Weah is no exception and this will just be another empty talk.

  18. Where were they from 2005, 2011 and before NEC 2017 registration vetting? They are joking because Amb. Weah and the CDCians are now prepare to lead the country for the next 6 years and beyond.

  19. VP Joseph Bockai is now the presidential nominee of Unity Party, and, perhaps, all associated organizations would do well to concentrate on spreading his message, promoting his platform, and getting new voters. Let the UP campaign committees handle tactical matters such as Senator Weah ‘ right to contest or not. We’re not even going to waste time listing the manifold arguments against that position.

    However, ironically, it could do more harm than good for UP in two essential ways. First, it smirks of insecurity and defeatism; and, second, there is the potential for confusion and violence in pursuing a futile political ploy.

    Not to mention that some of us read with no intention of retaining and remembering what we have read. But, when ready, we quote by rote George Satayana’s admonition against forgetting the lessons of history in order to not repeat them. How could smartalecks forget that almost similar tactics drove the sectarian cum election results’ dispute that led to civil war in next door Ivory Coast?

    Liberia has graver issues to address and resolve in the next six years. They include: class, ethnicity, ignorance, poverty, education, opportunities, reconciliation, development. Those are the overriding concerns that should be fleshed out in costed – political platforms. Truth be told, it is the failure of politicians to be committed to finding practical means to solve them which usually drive public disenchantment, anger, and radicalization – all indicators of probable instability.

    And Security Sector guns won’t help arrogant bad governance; they only create a police state masquerading as democracy. Of course, that’s a far cry from achieving even “relative peace”.

  20. Eh man, can this ever be true? Because I have never heard this from other sources. During this campaign period, all sorts of stuff will be sent to the gullible public. Please learn to read and listen carefully and critically.

  21. At this juncture, it is altogether proper to pose a question to President Ellen
    Johnson-Sirleaf; where is Liberia now in the midst of who is qualified to vote
    or not qualified to vote and to hold Government position as NEC Chairman and,
    perhaps, others?

  22. Stupid and fake News. Daily Observer, are you now the campaign spokes person for UP? according to my observation regarding your reportage, it has always been in favor of Unity Party. Are you now saying that there are nothing good about other parts? I asked this question because you have never written anything good about other parties. You never reported anything about CDC last rally. Must they bribe you before you cover the story? Is you CEO one of those that Boakai called and braided? We are watching if you cover that of the UP campaign again as you have always done. if you do, we will no longer trust you as a newspaper, you will lose credibility.

    PLEASE, BE CREDIBLE!!!

  23. I wish I had a concoction that heals stupidity…….. Why have my countrymen chosen to market their ignorance in this public forum? What crime has NAMBO committed by questioning Sen. Weah’s citizenship? When did this “Gbugud” called George Weah become a god, that nobody can critique his activities? I do support NAMBO for pursuing the legal means, in order to satisfy their curiosity. This is how civilized and well nurtured citizens behave. Meanwhile, you confused, uncivilized, unintelligent, uninformed, intellectual “Zoegoes”, who have nothing useful to offer, please shut up, and let the law take its course.

  24. Your should have bringing it up in 2005 and 2011. The people of Liberia don’t care.. Laws can’t go in everyone favor. Some are above the Law.. Lol.. Too Late…
