About 233 national volunteers with the National Youth Service Program of the Ministry of Youth and Sports have completed a four-day refresher teacher training to boost their classroom performance as teachers.

The NYSP recently recalled all of its education support volunteers assigned in public schools in 12 project counties.

The training took place at the Paynesville Community School in Paynesville City, July 20-24.

The training was organized by the National Youth Service Programme of the Ministry of Youth and Sports in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and UNICEF, the lead supporting agency of the NYSP.

The volunteers gained new skills in instructional planning, classroom management, assessment and evaluation, teaching methods and teaching aids, child psychology, among others.

Following the reopening of schools in March this year, the National Youth Service Program redeployed its education volunteers to about 89 public schools around Liberia to provide support services in an attempt to mitigate the instructional gaps in the education sector.

This is part of the program’s core operational activity, which was temporarily suspended in July last year due to the Ebola crisis.

The NYSP has been involved with frontline Ebola response, including contact tracing, using some of its experienced volunteers who have now transitioned to classroom activities.

All 233 volunteers will return to their assigned schools where they are expected to apply their new knowledge.

The National Youth Service Program is a modification of the National Youth Volunteer Service (NYVS). The NYSP is building on previous peace building and development interventions with the objective of linking youth leadership and national service to peace building and development strategy.

It is funded through the Peace Building Fund (PBF-L) with support from UNICEF and is under the reconciliation component of the Liberia Peace Building Program (LPP).
