Mrs. Maggie Carter’s Funeral Tomorrow


The death is announced of Mrs. Maggie Virginia Carter of Crozierville, Montserrado County, which sad event occurred on Sunday, February 14, 2021.  She was 82. 

Maggie was born Nov. 28, 1939 in Crozierville, to the union of Samuel and   Nancy T. Carter of the Crozierville Township.

She attended Christ Episcopal Church Parish Day School at Porte’s Hill, Crozierville and the Laboratory High School in Monrovia.

On July 26, 1959 in Crozierville she married Mr. Jeremiah Tuning of Sinoe County, a 1957 graduate of the Booker Washington Institute (BWI) to William Jeremiah Tuning. This union was blessed with four children—Clarence, Sweetie, Maret and Jeremiah, Jr.

She had two other children, Mackie and  Keleeme Kamara and four adopted children: Marie, Flomo, Lucia and Namukeh Kamara.

A lifelong teacher, Mrs. Maggie Tuning taught at Antoinette Tubman Community School from 1967 to 77.  She attended the Improved Efficiency of Leaning Project (IELP), under the auspices of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and Ministry of Education.  In 1974 she won a scholarship to study Home Economics at the Zorzor Rural Teacher Training Institute (ZRTTI), receiving a  Diploma after two years of study. She then entered the IEL until the war.

In 1997 she traveled to the Ivory Coast with her grandchildren and in 1999 she sent them to their mother, Mrs. Maret Tuning Koimene.

In 1999 Mrs. Maggie Carter Tuning relocated to Ghana, where she remained until 2004 when in January that year she joined her daughter, Mrs. Maret Koimene in Massachusetts and later Pennsylvania. She taught Sunday school teacher in Ghana and the USA.

Mrs. Maggie Carter returned to Liberia on November 8, 2020 in retirement. 

On February 14, 2021 she died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Sweetie Pratt in Banjor, Virginia. 

Her daughter Sweetie remembers Mrs. Maggie Carter as “a loving mother, grand and great grandmother and took care of her own and many other people’s children.”  She will be missed especially during Thanksgiving and Christmas, Mrs. Pratt said.

The funeral will take place at the church of her birth, Christ Episcopal in Crozierville on tomorrow, Saturday March 13, 2021, beginning at 10 o’clock a.m.  Interment will take place in the Christ Episcopal Cemetery in Crozierville.
