Liberia’s international movie star Frank Artus has pledged his commitment to all actions promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment in Liberia and the rest of the world.
He made the disclosure to newsmen on Friday at the UN Women office in Monrovia.
Artus said he strongly believes that women deserve to live in a society free of violence and discrimination, where they will have the same opportunities as men to achieve their potentials.
“I believe it is right that women be given the same opportunities as their male counterparts, because they too are involved in the policy and or decision-making of our country,” he said.
“I am one of the men who believe that equality for women is a basic human right that should benefit all of us, for which I am committed to take action against gender discrimination and violence against women to build a just and equal world.”
He noted that for too long men have kept in the shadows of efforts to promote women’s rights, but have unfortunately been at the center of most of the acts of violence against women and girls.
Today, he said, men see the HeForShe campaign as an opportunity to come to the limelight to show to the world that they are part of the solution.
He called on his fellow men to join the ‘HeForShe’ campaign to help make the country a better place for the girls, the mothers and sisters to live and enjoy life.
Earlier, the Liberia Country Representative UN Women, Ms. Awa N. Seck, pledged her commitment to have a Liberian movie star supporting such initiative like the ‘HeForShe.’
She recalled how the famous movie star has made many contributions in Liberia and the world in advancing the cultural agenda of Africa, while also representing Liberia on film.
“We have continued to enjoy his agenda, particularly as a famous movie star. Having him in Liberia and having him accept our invitation to form part of the ‘HeForShe’ is welcoming, and we will count on him for his support,” she explained.
