MoE Gets €20M TVET Program

Some County Education Officers at Education Sector Review held in Ganta

Authorities of the Ministry of Education (MoE) have received 20 million euros, which is about US$22.6 million, to boost its Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) program.

Assistant Education Minister for TVET and Special Education Sekou Dukuly informed the Daily Observer at the close of the 2018 Joint Education Sector Review in Ganta, Nimba County, that the money will be used to improve TVET to an appreciative standard. The Joint Sector Review was held from November 5-9, 2018.

Dukuly said six senior public schools were targeted, including Zwedru Multilateral High School, in Grand Gedeh County, Sinoe High School, in Greenville, Booker Washington Institute, in Kakata, Margibi County, Monrovia Vocational Training Institute, in Montserrado County, Cape Palmas High School, in Harper, Maryland County, and a school in Tubmanburg, Bomi County.

He said the TVET program will be one of the best in Liberia, something he classified as “state-of-the-art TVET,” where modern technology will be introduced to meet international standards and will gradually cover other senior high schools if the money is available.

One of the ministry’s basic concentration areas, according to Minister Dukuly, is agriculture, which will be able to provide jobs for the youth.

“We will also include some of the serious-minded high school dropouts in a short-term program, in order for them to acquire skills that will sustain themselves and their families because vocational education is key to the development of any country,” he added.

On Monday, November 5, authorities of the MoE and partners converged in Ganta to formulate an education program for the next five academic years under the banner, “2018 Joint Education Sector Review,” with the theme, “Quality Education for All: Reviewing the Gains and Planning for the Future.”

In the review exercise, all education actors, especially the county chief education officers (CEOs), were expected to make a report, indicating progress and challenges in which development priorities are used to strengthen county education systems.

Of the thematic areas, Early Childhood Development, basic and secondary teacher education, TVET, governance and management, and higher education were discussed.
