Mob Violence on the Rise in Ganta

Violent activities are on the increase in Nimba County’s commercial city of Ganta with two alleged armed robbers recently beaten unmercifully after they were booked robbing some residents of their valuables.
Police have begun an investigation into the latest incident after they rescued the two suspected criminals.
The suspected armed robbers, Titus Ezugo, 36, a Nigerian, and Patrick William, 27, a Liberian alias Delgee, were taken to the Ganta United Methodist Hospital for treatment of the wounds sustained from their beating.
They were later identified as residents from Zuluyee Town along the Ganta/Sanniquellie Highway.
According to Radio Kehghaeman (94.5 FM) Morning Breakfast Show, a group of gunmen raided some houses in Zuluyee and Cooper Farm. They reportedly made away with US$750 and LRD50, 000 from their several victims.
The alleged armed group reportedly used single barrel shotguns, according to the witness who spoke on Radio Kehgheaman last Wednesday, but the accused have denied ever being armed robbers.
A police officer (not named) identified suspect Patrick or “Delgee” as someone who police have arrested on numerous occasions on criminal charges.
As for Titus, he once owned a petty business, but has since become a motorcyclist.
He said his motorbike had broken down during the late hours of the night prompting residents to accuse him of being a criminal. He denied any involvement in criminal activities.
In July alone, four persons were allegedly killed by angry mobs in and around Ganta. The latest of those killings was on July 26 when one Bobby Morris Josiah, believed to be a Sierra Leonean, was beaten to death for allegedly snatching someone’s phone.
Tension erupted thereafter in the city following the death of Bobby as residents feared that Sierra Leoneans in Ganta would avenge the death of their compatriot since they claimed he was not a criminal.
Six persons were arrested for taking part in the mob justice. They were later charged with “criminal conspiracy and murder” and they are awaiting trial in Sanniquellie.
Early this year, an angry mob from Beeplay Town stormed the Buutuo Police Detail near the Liberian/Ivorian border and allegedly killed a murder suspect who was in police custody. The case is at the eighth Judicial Circuit Court.
